NASA has released a series of updates on the Artemis program, spanning commercial robotic lunar landers, technology demonstrations for future
surface habitats, and hardware progress on the Space Launch System (SLS) and Orion spacecraft for Artemis III and beyond.
Reinvigorated under NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, a suite of programs is working in tandem to lay the roadmap for the return of astronauts to the
lunar surface this decade.
Commercial Lunar Payload Services Missions
Under NASAs Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative, four companies currently hold assigned missions: Blue Origin, Firefly Aerospace, Intuitive Machines, and Voyager, the latter recently acquired by Astrobotic.
Blue Origin is preparing its first Blue Moon Mark 1 lander, named Endurance, for a mission targeted for the first quarter of 2027.
The lander completed environmental testing at NASAs Johnson Space Center earlier this year before returning to Blue Origin facilities at Kennedy Space Center. There it underwent acoustic and vibration testing, as well as separation tests simulating release from the New Glenn rocket. Communications testing with NASAs Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System and the Deep
Space Network has also been completed, along with an engine fit check of the BE-7 engine.
The next major step involves loading cryogenic propellants at a dedicated
test stand north of Launch Complex 36 to verify propellant storage and pressurization systems. If testing finishes before New Glenn is ready, Blue Origin plans to place the lander in a quiescent state until the rocket can deliver it to the Moon.
Firefly is advancing its second Blue Ghost mission, which aims to become the first U.S. lunar lander to attempt a landing on the far side of the Moon. The vehicles primary structure is complete, and teams are outfitting the lander ahead of pre-launch testing and final integration.
Intuitive Machines is progressing toward launch of its next Nova-C lander, Trinity. The company plans to install and fire the main engine on its test stand next month to verify the propulsion system. The lander will then return to the integration facility for exterior panels and payload hardware.
Voyagers Griffin-1 lander is undergoing environmental testing at NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory to confirm it can withstand space conditions.
That campaign is expected to conclude in the coming weeks, after which the lander will move to Kennedy Space Center for integration with a Falcon Heavy rocket for a launch later this year. Separately, NASA has partnered with Northrop Grumman to fly three technology demonstration payloads to the lunar surface. These will use technologies originally developed for the Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO) module of the now-cancelled Gateway station.
The demonstrations will focus on systems capable of surviving the lunar
night, power and data distribution, avionics, and related capabilities. Lessons from these flights are intended to inform future lunar surface habitats and Moon Base hardware.
Artemis III Progress
Preparations for Artemis III are accelerating, with the Orion crew module mated with its European Service Module, a major milestone.
Engineers will now complete electrical, data, and fluid connections between the modules, power up the integrated spacecraft for functional testing, and finish outfitting both elements. On the SLS side, NASA has made progress on a spacer that will replace the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS) for Artemis III. The ICPS is being reserved for Artemis IV; the spacer addresses height and interface differences so Orion can mate with the Core Stage.
The spacer has been welded at NASAs Marshall Space Flight Center and will

NASA will also use structural test articles for the Launch Vehicle Stage Adapter and Orion Stage Adaptercomponents that connect Orion to the Core Stage.
These articles were built and tested years ago; employing them for Artemis
III preserves flight hardware for Artemis IV.
Any modifications needed to meet flight specifications can be accommodated within the performance margin available for placing Orion into low Earth orbit.
The Core Stage and Solid Rocket Boosters (SRBs) are being processed in parallel ahead of stacking and testing later this year. Processing of the SRB segments has been accelerated by nearly four months compared with Artemis II. Per L2 SLS Artemis III Flow Updates, last week saw the start of the Lower Center SRB segments stacking.
The four RS-25 engines for the Core Stage, which arrived last month, are
being prepared for installation in the Vehicle Assembly Building. Component Reuse to Accelerate Schedules
To speed Artemis III and subsequent missions, NASA is reusing components from the Artemis II Orion spacecraft. While some avionics from Artemis I were already reused on Artemis II, the agency is now also transferring components originally intended as new builds onto the Artemis III spacecraft.
This allows earlier installation of hardware on Artemis III while freeing newly manufactured parts for Artemis IV.
NASA is evaluating reuse of more than 250 components from the Artemis II
Orion for the Artemis IV and V spacecraft to shorten production timelines and reduce costs. Images of the Artemis IV Orion Crew Module and European Service Module show ongoing preparations, underscoring the need for efficient Orion production to match a higher SLS launch cadence as directed by the NASA Administrator.
Artemis IV Core Stage Construction
At the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, both main tanks of the Artemis IV Core Stage are complete and advancing through proof testing and cleaning before application of spray-on foam insulation.
Via the latest updates, which continue to be lagged by weeks before being
made public, the liquid oxygen tank recently completed hydrostatic proof testing, in which it was filled with pressurized water to confirm it is leak-free and can withstand flight pressures.
The liquid hydrogen tank has finished its proof-testing campaign and will
soon begin cleaning operations. These steps will provide a clearer comparison of production speed relative to the third Core Stage.
