Blue Origin is nearing the end of its investigation into the catastrophic explosion of a New Glenn rocket that occurred roughly two and a half months ago, with CEO Dave Limp providing an update that pins the anomaly to a specific component in one of the boosters engines, although root cause analysis is continuing.
The update comes as Blue Origin continues post-recovery efforts at LC-36A while advancing plans for a sister pad at LC-36B.
On the evening of May 28, 2026, Blue Origin was conducting a routine integrated static-fire test of a fully stacked New Glenn vehicle at Launch Complex 36 (LC-36) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
The rocket, prepared for what would have been the vehicles fourth orbital flight and carrying no payload at the time of the test, suffered a rapid anomaly shortly after the seven BE-4 engines on the first stage ignited.
A massive fireball erupted, destroying the first-stage booster and the attached second stage.
The blast severely damaged key ground infrastructure, including toppling the lightning protection tower and wrecking the transporter-erector used to raise and support the vehicle.
No personnel were injured, though the overpressure event registered seismically and scattered debris across the site. Critical systems such as
the propellant tank farm, water tower, and Horizontal Integration Facility largely survived, allowing recovery work to begin quickly.
The incident halted Blue Origins operational cadence for New Glenn, which had completed three prior flights. The third mission in April 2026 successfully recovered its first stage but experienced a second-stage anomaly that prevented the payload from reaching its intended orbit.
The May 28 explosion, occurring just as the company prepared to resume flights, represented one of the most significant pad accidents in recent commercial spaceflight history and forced a major rethink of operations at
the companys sole New Glenn launch site.

Initial data from the rockets extensive suite of sensors pointed toward this component; subsequent recovery and inspection of debris from the wreckage corroborated the finding.
Limp did not provide further details on the precise failure mode of the
valve, such as whether it involved a mechanical jam, seal breach, or other issue, but emphasized that Blue Origin has been running extensive tests both at the individual component level and on complete engines to fully characterize the problem and validate fixes.
Importantly, the company has determined that only small modifications to the valve are required. These changes can be retrofitted into existing engines rather than necessitating entirely new hardware production runs, a
development that should help preserve manufacturing timelines and control costs. Updated valve hardware is already in production and expected to be ready by the end of August.
In parallel, teams continue working through the remaining branches of the formal fault-tree analysis. Limp described the overall path forward as clear, with Blue Origin still targeting a return to flight before the end of 2026 once the launch pad itself is ready.
The BE-4 engine is also used on United Launch Alliances Vulcan Centaur, raising the possibility that any shared design considerations could affect that vehicle as well, though ULA has been collaborating on the review. Ahead of the ill-fated New Glenns launch, it was claimed it was using a new family of BE-4, thus potentially separating commonality and freeing Vulcan to proceed.
Procedural issues may also have been in play, especially in light of rumored launch personnel changes at Blue Origin.

Blue Origin is not simply restoring the original configuration. Instead, the company is implementing a hybrid horizontal-to-vertical concept of operations that it had already been developing for future vehicles.

Stages will be mated horizontally in the Integration Facility, rolled to the pad on a simplified transporter, and then lifted into vertical orientation by crane before payload mating occurs on the pad. This approach eliminates the need to rebuild the destroyed transporter-erector and is expected to support higher launch cadence once operations resume.
The surviving vehicle access tower (also called the support or umbilical tower) has been destacked in sections for parallel modifications, including addition of new access platforms and fluid/control systems, before
restacking.
At the same time, Blue Origin is progressing work on its next launch complex just a few hundred meters to the north: Launch Complex 36B.
This pad is intended to support the much larger and more capable New Glenn 94 variant. Standing nearly 120 meters (about 400 feet) tall, compared with the current 72 configurations roughly 98 meters, the 94 will feature nine BE-4 engines on the first stage and four BE-3U engines on the second stage. It is designed to deliver approximately 70 metric tons to low Earth orbit, along with substantially greater capacity to higher-energy trajectories, and will incorporate a larger 8.7-meter-diameter fairing.
Constructing a new pad involves far more than steel and concrete; it also requires extensive regulatory paperwork. One key element is the Federal Aviation Administrations obstruction evaluation process, which analyzes whether proposed tall structures, permanent or temporary, could pose hazards to existing aerial navigation routes or nearby airports.
This week, Blue Origin filed for a new analysis covering a large mobile crane up to 228 meters tall that will support construction activities at the LC-36B site. The company submitted a separate application for a mobile crane to be used at the neighboring LC-36A for ongoing New Glenn operations, indicating that installation of the heavy-lift equipment is approaching.
Notably, Blue Origin also updated two existing obstruction analyses
originally filed in April for structures at LC-36B. Those earlier filings described an Umbilical Launch Tower planned at up to 152 meters and a Lightning Protection Tower at up to 182 meters.
The revised documentation significantly alters those heights: the umbilical tower is now listed at 83.8 meters, while the lightning protection tower
grows to 218 meters.
The change is puzzling given the scale of New Glenn 94. At nearly 120 meters tall, the rocket would stand almost 40 meters above the top of an 83.8-meter umbilical tower. An umbilical tower must provide connections to the second stage and potentially to the payload fairing for environmental control and other services. Even under optimistic assumptions, placing the highest connection at the very top of the shortened tower and attaching it to the
base of the fairing, the geometry implies an unusually tall fairing or a fundamental shift in how services are delivered.
The discrepancy suggests that either the rockets design itself is evolving or that the ground systems architecture for 94 is being rethought in ways not
yet publicly detailed.
Taken together, the investigation progress, pad reconstruction under a
revised concept of operations, and ongoing development of LC-36B paint a picture of a company moving deliberately but aggressively to recover from a major setback.
