Relativity Space has marked another significant step forward in the development of its reusable Terran R launch vehicle, with engine integration now underway on the first-stage thrust structure.
The company announced the milestone on Friday in a post on X, stating: Engine integration has begun. The first Aeon R engines are now installed on Terran
Rs thrust structure.
The thrust structure is designed to accommodate 13 Aeon R engines, each delivering 269,000 lbf of sea-level thrust for a combined liftoff thrust of 3,497,000 lbf. Relativity noted that every engine has already completed acceptance testing prior to installation.
Custom ground support equipment is being used to precisely position each engine, after which the fully integrated thrust structure will be rotated
into place for mating with the rest of Stage 1. One step closer to a fully integrated Stage 1, the company added.
This latest activity follows closely on the heels of the successful
completion of structural qualification testing for a dedicated Stage 1 test article. Over the preceding week, Relativity confirmed that the article had endured more than 400 pressure cycles, specifically 420 cycles according to company updates, along with 62 proof, stability, and ultimate loading cases. The campaign culminated in the application of 4.3 million lbf of axial compression while the tank remained pressurized, pushing the hardware well beyond expected operational limits.
These rigorous tests validate the Stage 1 tanks ability to withstand the full spectrum of loads associated with ground operations, launch, ascent, and flight, clearing a major risk-reduction hurdle for the reusable first stage.
In parallel, work on Terran Rs second stage continues at NASAs Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. The stage has completed a series of cryogenic proof tests and pressurization campaigns that loaded it with cryogenic fluids and pressurized it beyond anticipated flight loads. These efforts also included COPV manifold proof testing to verify the high-pressure systems that will pressurize propellants in flight. The successful cryoproof marked the formal activation of the A2 test stand, integrating infrastructure, flight hardware, ground systems, vehicle
software, and the broader test and operations teams.
Next steps for the upper stage involve removing it from the stand, installing its single Aeon V vacuum-optimized engine, and returning it for a planned hot-fire campaign. A similar path is being prepared for the first stage.
Once the thrust structure with its complement of Aeon R engines is mated to the remainder of Stage 1 hardware at Relativitys Long Beach, California, facility, the integrated booster is expected to travel to Stennis for its own hot-fire testing before eventual shipment to the launch site. Taken together, these concurrent campaigns- structural qualification of Stage 1, cryogenic validation of Stage 2, and the start of multi-engine integration position Terran R on a solid trajectory toward integrated vehicle testing and an eventual debut flight.
Relativity has not released a firm launch date, though internal targets have previously pointed toward no earlier than late 2026.
If the current pace of hardware and test progress holds, the vehicle could potentially edge ahead of some contemporaries in the medium-to-heavy lift class. By comparison, Rocket Labs Neutron has yet to fully complete
structural qualification of its first stage, and its second stage has not yet undergone hot-fire testing.
Terran R itself is a two-stage, partially reusable methalox vehicle standing approximately 87 meters tall with a 5.4-meter diameter. Its 13 Aeon R engines power the recoverable first stage, which features landing legs and grid fins for downrange recovery, while the upper stage is driven by a single Aeon V.
In reusable configuration, the rocket is designed to deliver roughly 23,500
kg to low Earth orbit, with higher performance available in expendable mode. The program builds directly on lessons learned from the single flight of the smaller Terran 1 demonstrator.

Relativity secured the historic site, previously used for Titan missiles, Apollo Service Module firings, Gemini processing, and Pershing tests, in
2019.
Recent progress includes assembly of multiple lightning tower modules ahead
of stacking, completion of the water tower to its full height (currently showing a two-tone paint scheme pending finalization), visible installation
of flame diverter components, and ongoing assembly of upper strongback fluid brackets.
Earthwork on the access ramp leading to the Terran R pad has also advanced substantially, further preparing the complex for the arrival of flight hardware and eventual launch operations.
With structural qualification behind it, engine integration underway, Stage 2 cryogenic testing complete, and Cape infrastructure steadily taking shape, Relativity Space is steadily assembling the pieces required to bring Terran R toward its long-awaited debut launch attempt.
