Howdy guys!

I'm not really pleased by the performance of my BBS running under VirtualBox, so I'm going to test out and possibly move to linux based Synchronet. I will be running dos door games and such. What's the best flavor of Linux to use? I "grew up" using Red Hat, and then switched to Ubuntu so I'd probably default to using Ubuntu 64bit. Any thoughts?

I don't think the distro matters all that much, but for what it's worth, I'm running Debian 8.6 (jessie).

As for DOS door games, you'll need to setup DOSEMU and build Synchronet with the USE_DOSEMU stuff enabled and fight with that (batch files and all). I've never done it myself, but a lot of sysops have, successfully.

I've had a lot of success with Ubuntu as far as SBBS for Linux. It works great with DOS doors. Only thought would be suggest using Ubuntu. I've ran it a few times and switched back and forth between Linux and Windows over the years. Always resort back to Windows thus far. I would like to see more GUI with Synchronet as far as a better waiting for caller screen and utilities.

I'd use what you prefer, Ubuntu sounds like a good option. I run under Raspian on a Pi. :)

There is no best flavor of Linux to use. Whatever you feel the most comfortable

with, is the right answer. If you have any issues that any of the rest of us haven't had on Linux, you have people in this "support group" to help you out. :)

I've been able to compile Synchronet and got DOSEMU working on CentOS 5, 6 and RHEL 6. If you can find and get DOSEMU working on Ubuntu, I suspect you'll not have issue.

I run SBBS on a Ubuntu 64b Linux box and it seems to run fine. I don't do doors
much so that hasn't been an issue. I have also tried Debian and RH but I keep coming back to Ubuntu. All are usable so I think it is more a matter of which flavor that one is most comfortable using.
