if it is a permissions problem, i don't understand it... the bbs is
running as sbbs:sbbs and the node.dab file is owned by sbbs:sbbs with
permissions 600... i don't see where the group would come into play
nor the ability to others not the owner or not in the group would need
    to read from the file...

Is it possible that the doors aren't running as sbbs:sbbs?

not as far as we can tell... they're all built by sbbs:sbbs and that reflects in the ownership of the binaries... sbbs, itself, is root:root because of using ports <1024 but it switches to sbbs:sbbs at some point... we don't have the original initial build logs any more but SBBSUSER=sbbs SBBSGROUP=sbbs was used then as well as in the update script...

FWIW: we're seeing this with SBL but not SBJ... DPOKER is not configured for some reason...

Strange. They are built and executed in an almost identical manner, so that might provide a good clue: what is different about the contents of those 2 directories (xtrn/sbl and xtrn/sbj).

here's something we just realised... Max, user 1, does not see the error messages about locking the node.dab file... the other user accounts do... i had sec level 90 so we boosted it to 99 like Max's... i still see the error so we feel that it is not sec level related...

so we looked at the entry in the BBS list that has been being verified... it was created by Max and i updated it at one point... it has also been auto-deleted a time or two and undeleted to get it back as well... not sure if either of those things may have anything to do with the situation...
