• Remote SCFG exiting

From Nightfox@1:103/705 to Digital Man on Tue Apr 16 12:34:22 2019
    Hi DM,

Today I logged into my BBS via telnet and ran the remote SCFG. I went to the External Programs section and then tried to go in to the External Editors section, but it quit back to the external programs menu. I don't see any errors in the BBS log. But I wanted to let you know of this issue.

I tried and wasn't able to reproduce the issue. Are you only having this problem when trying to run scfg remotely? The Windows build of scfg? Can you still reproduce the problem?

Yes, it's only when I try to run scfg remotely. It's the Windows build. I'm using the build from April 14th.

Yes, it's only when I try to run scfg remotely. It's the Windows build.
I'm using the build from April 14th.

    And it's still happening?

Does it happen if you run "scfg -ix" instead of ANSI mode? I have seen crashes in ANSI mode.

I updated to today's build (April 17), and it's still happening.

I tried using -ix instead of -iA, and it said the CIOLIB library failed to initialize, and it exited with a code of -1.

If it helps any, I can verify I don't have this issue with my "nix" version of Synchronet.

My mistake, -ix is only supported on *nix. Try '-id' instead.

It is weird that it only has an issue in ANSI mode. I suspect it's a bug somewhere in the ciolib's ANSI stuff which is causing an exception. I'll have to run it under a debugger in ANSI mode and see if I can catch any exceptions. If you have Visual Studio installed, you might be able to do the same and if you could provide a backtrace, that'd be a huge time saver.

I'll have to see if I can get Synchronet built in debug mode on my system so I can do that. The wiki says the components for Windows are mostly built with Visual Studio Express 2013 - Do you think it would be okay to use a later version?

Yes. I've successfully built it with MSVC 2017. I haven't tried 2019 yet.

I installed Visual Studio (2019 Community) and started to debug this to get more information, but the problem seems to be fixed now (even with the release binary from the April 28 build). It's no longer exiting for me when I go to the external editor configuration remotely.

Most likely the problem isn't actually fixed, but just isn't happening now. I've definitely seem "random" crashes/exits of uifc apps (e.g. SCFG) when in "ANSI" mode, but I usually can't reproduce it when I want to debug it. I think the bug is still there somewhere... lurking. Likely in src/conio/ansi_cio.c.
