Tuesday, 08/01/17 6 to 9 PM at the Hulen Mall food court, at 4800 South
Hulen Street,in southwest Fort Worth, TX.
Even though 12 people had RSVP's yes, only seven showed up, this eventually drizzly evening.
Table #1 - Participants: Connor, Duane, Michael Z
We started with another of DrCOs Fluxx variant gamesrCa this one Zombie Fluxx.
As with other Fluxx games the game starts with all players getting three cards
then Draw 1 play 1. But with this game there is easily double the amount of Creeper cards in the form of a single zombie, pair of zombies, Trio of zombies and quartet of zombies. Many goal cards have the game ending if a certain number of zombies are on the table resulting in nobody winning. Thus, it was with our first game of the evening. We played for 26 minutes and the zombies won and the humans (us) lostrCa sighrCa of course Connor was ready for another game (me thinks he likes the way you can twist the cards to mess with the next in line (which is usually me!) <grin>)
We then played DrCOs new Formula D - a race car game. We raced the basic race which was held in Monaco. You are allowed to have up to 18 points of damage to
your car before it cannot race anymore. Going too fast though a turn, passing
too close to another player, or exceeding max speed can damage your car. There are six gears (six dice) that you can ramp up each with higher numbers on
the dice. 1st gear you can only move 1 or 2 spaces. 2nd gear two to four spaces, 3rd gear 4-8, 4th gear 7-12, 5th gear 11-20 spaces and 6th gear 21-30 spaces. Each time you have to down shift you also do damage to the car so it is a balance on speed yet control over the turn parts of the course. We ran two laps to make the race. Duane had pole position, Michael 2nd, and Connor 3rd. The race was fairly even through the first lap with Duane and Michael hitting the pits at the same time. Duane had 16 damage to his car and Michael had 10. Connor was two turns behind getting into the pits with 10 damage. The
pits repair the damage and you can leave in 4th gear. Duane and Michael were close together for the first 3 turns when Michael pulled way ahead in the straight away while Duane rolled minimum on the dice and then over rolled though a turn and beat up his car pretty good. Michael kept a steady advance while Duane had to drive safer and not wreck his car on damage points. Meanwhile Connor kept on steady and was coming up DrCOs tailpipe at the end of the series of turns before the straight-line finish. Michael won the race hands down. Connor passed Duane on the straight away before the finish line to
take 2nd place three turns behind Michael. Duane passed the finish line the next turn taking 3rd four turns behind Michael. The race took 80 minutes to play. (1 hr. 20 mins).
It was now 8:00 and we only had an hour left so you guessed itrCa another game of Zombie Fluxx. WowrCa it took a long time to play this onerCa We went through two and a half decks before Duane won this 43-minute game.
OverallrCa we had a good night of gaming!!
Table #2 - My die Siedler von N|+rnberg, which was new to Michael L and Justin.
Zach E had played once, a year ago. the rest. Play order was: Michael W, Michael L, Zach, then Justin. As the others had played basic Settlers of Catan,
we used the free set-up to place our initial two settlements. Here's a so-so photo of the bare board and components
https://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/354121/die-siedler-von-nurnberg .
Everyone did a good job of choosing potential high probability production spots for their initial two settlements. As to the roads, the Right of
Way cards were then doled out. I believe Michael L got two, Justin one, and I got two (leaving Zach none) Of course ownership of the roads did change hands several times.
Zach was the first to build a workshop within the city, taking the 3:1 trading spot in the Hauptmarkt area. He soon built the second one, placing it in the Bauhof area, allowing him to build towers. Michael L was the second to build a "sweatshop". Soon they were shipping finished goods down the roads to Venice, Prague, and Frankfort. At about the 70% mark I got in on that game. Justin desperately wanted to build a workshop in the city, but he just never could collect the resources (3 ore, 2 grain) to do so, as grain was in short supply this game. So the other three of us then manufacture goods and shipped them.
If memory serves, Zach was the first to build a wall segment. I soon followed suit. Michael L got in on the walls a good deal later. Justin stayed out of that fight, especially after Zach and I began building towers. The prestige chips this construction gave soon lead to Zach and I tussling over the top two city council positions (worth 4 VPs and 3 VPs). We swapped them back and forth during the middle third of the game. But when I later built two towers on the same turn and got to 11 prestige points I was able to keep the 4 VP card for the rest of the game. Late in the game Michael L took the 2 VP City Council card when he finally built his third wall segment.
At an hour and 40 minutes in I was hovering on the cusp of winning. It took 13 points and I had 11. On my next turn I built a settlement. But in the meantime,
Justin had taken one of my three) Right of Way cards from me, so I was back down to 11 points. Oy! On my penultimate turn I began with 11 resource cards and about 6 gold. I thought I'd be able via trading to turn that into two more VPs to win. By a hair, no. I did at least place my fifth settlement, bringing me to 12 points. Yet I was unable to build another workshop to clinch the deal that turn. I had the three ore, but only one grain. However on my next turn I shipped a lot of vellum down Michael L's Venice road, received 6 gold, and turned it into grain at 4:1 with the bank. Finally, I was able to build my second workshop and declare victory.
Scores: Michael W 13 (5 settlements, 2 workshops, 2 roads, "4" council card), Michael L 10 (5 settlements, 1 workshop, 2 roads, "2" council card), Zach E 9 (4 settlements, 2 workshops, "3" council card), Justin J 6 (5 settlements, 1 road). Duration: two hours. At game end the purple time cone was on the 1380 AD
spot (60% of the way up the time track). Four towers and 12 wall segments were
built today. Everyone enjoyed the game.
