• one way gating of inbound mailing lists

From mark lewis@1:3634/12.73 to all on Wed Jan 9 11:41:00 2019

my system is the gateway into a FTN network for a mailing list...
the mailing list is "read only"...
imported messages from the list are exported to a FTN echomail area...
the FTN echomail area is NOT "read only" and users should be able to discuss postings from the mailing list...

    1. how can i prevent messages posted in the echomail area on my system from being passed back through the gateway toward the list?

    2. how can i prevent messages posted in the echomail area on other systems from
being passed back through the gateway toward the list?

in other words, i'm looking for a "half gate" option where i can import from the list but not export to the list... i have/had several areas like this...

    Have you tried using ctrl/alias.cfg?

    some_address@my.bbs.com sub:code

Should import any messages to the given address to the sub with the given code, without creating any kind of export rule. (The only point I'm unsure of is what happens with replies to the original message.) You'd need a unique address per list subscription, I guess.

For exporting messages from a sub to a mailing list, the separate ListGate module is used.

    some_address@my.bbs.com sub:code

i've got that... that's how it gets in...

So what's the trouble - are replies to the initial message being sent back to the list?

none that i know of yet... it is a matter of prudence ;)

    - are replies to the initial message being sent back to the list?

i don't know... i don' think so but the area is pretty quiet... i just don't want to wake up to angry emails if you know what i mean ;)

That's the default behavior. To import messages from a mailing list, you only need the "sub:" alias in your ctrl/alias.cfg. That's it. You don't need to use/enable the ListGate module.

    2. how can i prevent messages posted in the echomail area on other system from

    Same answer.

All use need is that "sub:" line in your ctrl/alias.cfg I think.

ListGate is for gating sub-boards with external mailing lists. In your example "half-gate", you don't want/need ListGate at all.

thanks for the confirmation... the sub line in alias.cfg is all i have... i've not even looked at listgate :)

You just need to setup the appropriate alias in alias.cfg for the incoming email. You do NOT setup listserver.ini.

For example something like this in alias.cfg would do the trick.

    mylist sub:READ_ONLY_LIST_ECHO

This means anything sent to mylist@yourdomain.com will be posted to the sub with internal code of READ_ONLY_LIST_ECHO.

    Job done! :)

This is a purely one way gate, which sounds like what you want.

No, you're thinking of ListServer, which is for hosting your own list. But for the one way gate, the alias.cfg entry is all you need.

So what's the trouble - are replies to the initial message being sent
    back to the list?

Yeah I'm a bit confused too, replies shouldn't go out unless listgate is configured to do so.

my question was preemptive... i wanted to know ahead of time before i was surprised... listgate and listserver are not employed over here AFAIK... they exist but i'm not using them specifically...

OK, then you have nothing to worry about. It's doing exactly what you want. :)
