how are the systems listed in sbbsimsg.lst determined? i think i have the needed ports open inbound but must be missing something because sestar.synchro.net doesn't show up in the list...

You need to ensure udp port 11 is open and/or forwarded in your firewall/router.

    bbs@bbs:/sbbs/fido$ finger @sestar.synchro.net
    finger: connect: Connection timed out

You should see something like this

    bbs@bbs:/sbbs/fido$ finger @endofthelinebbs.com
    User Action Time Age Sex Node --------------------- ------------------------------- -------- --- ---
    Nelgin at main menu (A) 0:13:05 48 M 1

    it is...

    bbs@bbs:/sbbs/fido$ finger @sestar.synchro.net
    finger: connect: Connection timed out

that should actually say that the connection is refused... i do not have finger
enabled... it is on port 79 anyway ;)

my understanding is that finger is not necessary to be listed in the sbbsimsg list... only ActiveUser-UDP (UDP port 11) and MSP (TCP port 18)...

I have port 11 for UDP forwarded to my BBS, but Finger reports the connection timed out.

I posted a lengthy message here about it not too long ago, but the requirements are also listed here:

finger uses TCP port 79, normally. The inter-bbs instant message thing uses SYSTAT (UDP port 11) instead, so finger is not required/used any more.
