Yeah, I don't think there's an easy way to let someone free-form the address (unless someone made a script that allowed that to let users telgate to anywhere). The only real thing I can think of off the top of my

A script that accepts those parameters from the user is exactly the scenario I was thinking of. I mean, it would be a silly thing to do, but people do silly things.

    All,

I'm wondering if someone uses telgate to connect to another BBS from my BBS will they show as my IP or will their IP pass through?

I was looking around and couldn't find this info.

I'm wondering if someone uses telgate to connect to another BBS from my BBS will they show as my IP or will their IP pass through?

The connection originates from your BBS; the remote side will see your IP address and not your client's. This is typical of any kind of 'proxy' scenario, and there's not much of a way around it. There are different options and things to consider depending on why you're asking.

I know it does with rlogin, so pretty sure your ip will be passed with telgate also.

Thanks.. I thought that might be the case, but didn't want to assume. I'm just trying to understand why other boards would be set up in the external program lists like this when a person can just use their term to connect directly. I get that you could setup connections to game servers or another bbs you run.

I don't think I want someone connecting to another BBS with my IP and then getting into trouble of some kind. Anyway, just my first impressions of it. I'd like to hear other things you can do with it however. :)

    Thanks,

why? well, for instance, some of us still have dialup callers... why should they be limited from visiting those telnet boards? apparently they are connecting to our system via dialup for a reason... one possible reason being that they don't have internet...

I think it's akin to having a "Links" section on your website. You just want to draw users' attention to other systems that you like but which they may not have heard of.

That's a risk but probably a small one. Presumably the remote sysop would be aware of this type of feature and wouldn't hold you personally accountable for some annoying user.

You could always restrict use of telgate to validated users / users above some security level or with some flag set.

it. I'd like to hear other things you can do with it however. :)

Can't think of anything telgate-specific offhand, but if there was a scenario where some remote application needed to know the user's real IP address (a weather-by-location script, etc.) ways can always be found to pass along this information in or out of band.

I can't imagine them being able to cause too much trouble by being able to connect to another BBS, though it's possible. The main thing would be to never let them specify, freeform, the remote address and port they wish to connect to; only provide them with a preset list of remote systems.

when this capability first showed up back in the '90s, sysops did hold other sysops responsible for their bad users... there were users specifically creating jump-chains from system to system to system to finally end up on a system they wanted to cause problems on... it was virtually impossible to chase
them back through the telnet proxy chains to stop them so a lot of systems started turning off or severly restricting access to this option... to this day
we don't really know which BBS package or some combination of packages was used
for the first implementation of this capability...

It'd be fair for them to say "Someone from your system is causing trouble on my system; either deal with the user or stop letting people connect to my system from yours." That's about the worst I would expect.

I don't use this feature except for a couple of specific things. In the past I have set up telnet gates and connections to alternate IRC networks for users that I'm comfortable with, because they've been in places where their internet access has been restricted in some way.

the main problem was that no on e actually knew that it was other BBSes proxying the offenders through... when that was discovered, then yes, like i said, sysops held other sysops responsible and then those capabilities were curtailed...

agreed to a point... the sticky wicket is that the trail cannot be traced back past the first inbound connection... one must get every sysop on the train involved to track the predator down and bar them... it isn't like http proxies where there's a special header containing the originating IP...
