in echocfg->domains there's a field for nodelist... is this just the nodelist directory or is it the nodelist filename?

maybe like ../data/fido/nodelist/Z1DAILY.* ??

In my case I have tickit's nodelist_handler write the nodelists to fido/nodelist/fidonet.nodelist, fsxnet.nodelist etc. That way when nodelists are received they are upto date.

yeah, that's what i'm doing... i'm hoping to be able to remove the specific host entries in the linked nodes records and let BinkIT look them up in the nodelist... i missed the Z1DAILY that came in so i have to wait for the next one and see if it updates properly...

It could be that FTN isn't something he does a lot at his BBS.. dunno.

I like ftnnv, I use it periodicaly to search or browse the nodelist. It's handy.

Because it was a crappy prototype that I wrote in a few hours. If I were to go on supporting it, I'd want to rewrite it to make that job easier. Doing that properly gets tricky when I don't have any real use for the module myself and don't know what features it should have.

Since I don't want to even look at the existing code, let's just forget that this thing exists and discuss what a brand new FTN nodelist browser should look like and be capable of:

1) Hierarchical zone-net-node lightbar browsing
2) Displays node details in list, maybe more details on highlight
3) Lets you select a node and send netmail to the operator
4) Lets you send a ping messsage? (I suspect this is a feature request)
5) ...

That's part of it. I've rejoined FidoNet and should be on fsxNet shortly, so I'll be in a better position to help with our various FTN tools or make new ones. (I can see there's work to be done, but I've been very disconnected from it. Still re-wrapping my head around this stuff.)

of memory that can be used otherwise I get out of memory error. Not sure if there's a way around that really.

That's all part of the 'crappy prototype' thing. It doesn't *have* to load an entire nodelist into memory at once, or all of them. I'll just have to take a look at the parser to see what's possible.

Would also be nice to be able to put in a node address and get the BBS info. I don't think it can do that right now, but that's probably for another post...

A search function could be included.

I like ftnnv, I use it periodicaly to search or browse the nodelist. It's handy.

I use that too. I remember echicken saying one time that he wanted to improve the code in that script or something, and for now he has removed it from his BBS for download.

I can see those being useful options, and those fields exist in the nodelist. Once you have done the search and selected a system from the results, then options like sending netmail and pings could become available. Given that we now live in age of mostly (almost all?) Internet based connectivity, where direct connections incur no extra costs to the sysop, perhaps we could allow the user to determine the flavour of the netmail? Or at least offer that to those with sysop access. For example, I may want to crash another node, because either (1) there is a system down on the normal routes, or (2) I want to send a file attachment (some hubs won't or aren't able to pass the file), or (3) I want to send it immediately, and the normal route has a delay, because someone in the middle only polls x times per day.

The nodelist browser can be smart and only offer those options when it detects compatible protocols on both the remote node and the local one (i.e. both must support one or more transfer protocols in common - dialup, binkp, etc). Obviously a node with only binkp trying to crash a node with only dialup is not going to work!
