Hi all,digitaldistortionbbs.com,
I was using DtDNS as a dynamic IP update service for
which I use for my BBS. Now that DtDNS is gone, does anyone know of a good alternate free dynamic DNS site that can update the IP address for anydomain?
It seems that some of the dynamic DNS services want to also provide adomain.
I just want to periodically update the IP address fordigitaldistortionbbs.com.
It seems some dynamic IP services charge money; ideally it would besomething
free.are
It seems digitaldistortionbbs.com has the wrong IP address now, so people
unable to connect to my BBS using that domain. Alternately, digdist.synchro.net should work.

I cant help out with a DYNDNS, but I can give you a free synchronet host so you wouldn't need a dynamic IP address in the first place...

Nightfox, If push comes to shove, I could host the domain as a private domain on afraid.org and give you the URL to do DDNS updates. I have a premium account so I can put the stealth flag on it but do it free for you.

An alternative solution would be to just make digitaldistortionbbs.com a
record (not an A record) which points to digdist.synchro.net (not an IP address). That way, so long as digdist.synchro.net is correct, so will the longer domain name be.

In your DNS setup you'll usually have an A report which points to the
ip address
so it'd look something like
digitaldigestbbs.com..IN.A.198.105.244.114
but a CNAME refers back to another name
digitaldigestbbs.com..IN.CNAME.digdist.synchro.net.
(Which actually resolves to 50.39.189.195 right now).
SO whenever anyone looks up digitaldigestbb.com the DNS points
to digdist.syncrho.net which points to whatever the A record
is.
An alternative solution would be to just make digitaldistortionbbs.com a CNAME record (not an A record) which points to digdist.synchro.net (not an IP address). That way, so long as digdist.synchro.net is correct, so will the longer domain name be.

As others have pointed out, a CNAME is simply a pointer to another domain name.
No need to provide an example, it's already been done. :)

Yes; not sure what you mean..?
It sounds like the CMAKE solution with digdist.synchro.net may be the simplest solution, so I plan to try that.

your domain is registered somewhere, right? you have some app to update its record, right? you're not providing your own DNS are you?
Yep, should work. One caveat: If you're receiving Internet email using your domain, you will need a MX record for your domain name that points to digdist.synchro.net with a low preference number, because MTAs won't deliver to a CNAME.

When I try to add an MX record that points to digdist.synchro.net, it gives me an error saying a CNAME record exists with the same name.

A CNAME that points to a FQDN needs to end in a '.', like so:
digitaldistortionbbs.com CNAME digdist.synchro.net.
If you didn't include that last '.' maybe that's the problem.
There does seem to be a problem with your hostname now:
$ host digitaldistortionbbs.com
Host digitaldistortionbbs.com not found: 1(FORMERR)

I'm not familiar with that service. Do you have the option of editing your zone file directly? I remember back when I used to use dtdns.com they had that option. <shrug>

My DNS server can handle dynamic DNS. I could maybe write a script
similar to how DNS updates are sent to vert. I'll maybe look into it
this weekend.

Locally or secure remote updates?
It sounds like the CMAKE solution with digdist.synchro.net may be
CNAME but yeah... it is the easiest and you don't have to update it any more...

It's be secured with an individual key or something, maybe even a

It seems I got digitaldistortionbbs.com working again. I'm still
having a problem adding MX records for it with digdist.synchro.net.
The interface keeps giving me the error that CNAME records exist with
the same name. I may have to contact support with them on that.

If there is no MX record for the domain but you have an A record, or I guess a CNAME and it can resolve to an address, then the mail server should use that instead. An MX isn't absolutely necessary in that case.

Hmm, interesting. That suggests Gmail delivered to a CNAME, which is generally frowned upon.
