A nice feature for SMBUTIL would be to sort messages by date. For some
reason 2017 posts got behind the 2016 posts.

Can you elaborate? SMBUTIL doesn't re-arrange (or sort) posts, so I'm not sure what you're referring to.

It would be a nice feature if it had a parameter to do so. I had possibly gotten dupes in my network dated back in 2016. Those posts appended after
my the real "new posts" which are dated 2017. For instance in the web interface for my SBBS, the message listing looks like this:

Most methods for displaying messages or message headers will use the order in the message base, which is keyed off the message "number" (an internally unique number not normally shown to users). If you re-number the messages in a message base, bad things would happen (threads break, new-scans stop being correct, etc.).

If a message viewer does any sorting at all, it'd probably be by "date/time imported" rather than "date/time written". It sounds like you want a message view ("the web interface") to sort the messages displayed by "date/time written". That's certainly possible, but again could be confusing to users for multiple reasons (replies having a "when writteN" time-stamp earlier than the original message, for example, due to timezone issues or just a misconfigured clock somewhere).

Anyway, to summarize, smbutil won't be re-number or re-arranging messages in a message base. If you want message displayed in a different order, then that would be a function of the message viewer you're using.
