• Messing around with Message Areas

From Rmh@1:103/705 to All on Fri Jul 13 20:26:13 2018
    Hi,

I couldn't describe better the mess I just have made...

I was importing a few thousand areas from Usenet in the believe all could just go well and when it was just about, I noticed, on loading the BBS, the messge pointers would be taking an eternity to load.
Not being that enough, I got a few large bundles of echos and there I started with the dance.
For some reason some of the message groups I created against the Node configuration (GroupHub) wouldn't bind correctly, so I got thinks like the following:

Configuration for REC.GAMES.COMPUTER.DOOM.M-linked-node (1:xxxx/Node) not found in /home/bbs/sbbs/ctrl/sbbsecho.ini

Configuration for REC.GAMES.COMPUTER.DOOM.P-linked-node (1:xxxx/Node) not found in /home/bbs/sbbs/ctrl/sbbsecho.ini

Configuration for REC.GAMES.COMPUTER.EVERQU-linked-node (1:xxxx/Node) not found in /home/bbs/sbbs/ctrl/sbbsecho.ini

Configuration for REC.GAMES.COMPUTER.PLANET-linked-node (1:xxxx/Node) not found in /home/bbs/sbbs/ctrl/sbbsecho.ini

Configuration for REC.GAMES.COMPUTER.PUZZLE-linked-node (1:xxxx/Node) not found in /home/bbs/sbbs/ctrl/sbbsecho.ini

Configuration for REC.GAMES.COMPUTER.QUAKE-linked-node (1:xxxx/Node) not found in /home/bbs/sbbs/ctrl/sbbsecho.ini

Configuration for REC.GAMES.COMPUTER.QUAKE.-linked-node (1:xxxx/Node) not found in /home/bbs/sbbs/ctrl/sbbsecho.ini

Configuration for REC.GAMES.COMPUTER.STARS-linked-node (1:xxxx/Node) not found in /home/bbs/sbbs/ctrl/sbbsecho.ini

Configuration for REC.GAMES.COMPUTER.STARWA-linked-node (1:xxxx/Node) not found in /home/bbs/sbbs/ctrl/sbbsecho.ini

Configuration for REC.GAMES.COMPUTER.ULTIMA-linked-node (1:xxxx/Node) not found in /home/bbs/sbbs/ctrl/sbbsecho.ini

I don't know how ti fix that now.

On the other hand, for another group st as above, I decided to remove the WHOLE Message Group from the Configuration as it was about 20000 echo message groups and it left me with something like the following:

USENETALAL499999: Unrecognized internal code, assumed passthru

USENETALAL599999: Unrecognized internal code, assumed passthru

USENETALAL699999: Unrecognized internal code, assumed passthru

USENETALAL799999: Unrecognized internal code, assumed passthru

USENETALAL899999: Unrecognized internal code, assumed passthru

USENETALAL999999: Unrecognized internal code, assumed passthru

USENETALAM999999: Unrecognized internal code, assumed passthru

USENETALAN999999: Unrecognized internal code, assumed passthru

USENETALAO999999: Unrecognized internal code, assumed passthru

So, I don't have much of an idea how to fix all that without making the issue even bigger!!

    Suggestions welcome.

As usual, many thanks guys and girls.

That may be a problem in itself. I don't think I have even close to a few thousand message areas on my BBS.. I have multiple message groups on my BBS, and I still only have 575 sub-boards on my BBS. I would imagine that with a few thousand sub-boards, it would take quite a bit of time to load message pointers..

The simplest thing to do would be to restore a backup of your areas.bbs file from before. You should have some areas.#.bbs files from auto-backups.

I've committed (to v3.17a in CVS) some significant optimizations to message pointer initializing (for new users or "guest") as well as the loading of message pointers during logon. I'd appreciate it if you could try them out and see if it remedied your problem with importing thousands of newsgroups.
