Does the Synchronet dynamic DNS sevice support IPv6, or will it in the future?
If you haven't heard, DtDNS (dtdns.net/com, originally darktech.org) is ceasing operation on August 1st. I received this email today (in part):

It doesn't yet, but I suppose it will need to eventually. :-)

If you are using any of the following second-level domain names for your BBS's TCP/IP services, it looks like you'll need to find another provider.

I've noticed for quite a while now that when I try to load my BBS web site via digdist.bbsindex.com in Google Chrome, Chrome shows an error screen saying bbsindex.com as a malicious domain. I've wondered if people have flagged a lot of bbsindex.com web sites due to too many people putting up bad content using DtDNS' services.

Some of us already run IPv6. Reminds me, I have to get my DNS provider for the telnet address to ass my IPv6 address, now that I'm running 3.17 with IPv6 enabled.

Anyway, to answer your question, if you have a static IP address, you don't need any "service" at all beyond your domain name registrar (godaddy?). If you have a dynamic IP address that changes frequently,
then yes, you'll want a service that allows you to automate that synchronization.

I've added experimental IPv6 support the DynDNS service here on
Vertrauen:
* Update your exec/dyndns.js file from CVS
* Update your command-line in SCFG->External Programs->Timed Events->DYNDNS by
adding "-ip6 <your-ipv6-address>"
After performing a DYNDNS event, your DNS record at synchro.net should have a AAAA record with your specified IPv6 address. You can later
remove the AAAA record by removing the "-ip6" option from your dyndns command-line if you wish.
Caveat:
If your IPv6 address changes frequently, this won't really work since I don't have the client script detecting your current IPv6 address and Vertrauen does not (yet) support IPv6 over the Internet (so the server script can't dynamically detect it either). Once I have IPv6 support through my ISP (Spectrum Business), I should be able to enable auto-detection of your public IPv6 address like I do today with public IPv4 addresses.
Please give it a test!

Interestingly, sectiononebbs.com and section1bbs.com point to different IP addresses.Yes, they do Rob. That is intentionally done. One is a website the other is the actual BBS.

I switched to noip.com since dyndns changed their pricing. I'm happy with noip.com.
I have Dynamic DNS Enhanced, 25 hostnames. 25 USD per year.
You can also use their free service. 3 hostnames, but you have to acknowlegd the host per 30 days, so it's not abanded.

It works like a charm. I've received several mail sessions with IPv6 since I set this up and I'll be watching the logs to see what happens with BBS calle
I think this may be a first (or at least one of the first) for dynamic dns services. I don't actually have any others so I can't say for sure but it is the only one I know of.
I think all ISPs have IPv6 setup at least in testing mode and it is likely t become the norm very soon now.

host bdgcag.synchro.net says..
bgdcag.synchro.net has address 174.49.163.121

Is that the correct IPv6 address? Is that a tunnel?
When your node polls here the log begins with..

I've never used a tunnel myself so I don't know what setup is needed for it.

I was seeing "too many open files" errors in my error.log when I was running the ecwebv4 web interface. I have since gone back to the default interface a those errors don't show up now.
I don't know why and I don't have a solution.
Are you running ecwebv4? I'm going to get back to that when I have time to w it through.
I also had a couple of corrupt message bases that I suspect (but don't know) was caused by the "too many open files" errors I was seeing. I corrected tha with fixsmb and I hope that didn't happen to any of your message bases.
yea I am running ecwebv4 and far as I know there isnt any corrupt message bases.

Have you been running ecwebv4 for a while? In my case noticed problems soon after I set it up. I was happy with it but went back to the default until I can make it work.
I've had ecwebv4 installed on my BBS for a while. I've used it off and on and haven't noticed any issues. I haven't updated it in a while though.. But the last update I made, it had the avatar support.
Yep, yours was one of the BBSs I looked at looking at ecwebv4.
On my BBS machine I was getting errors like "too many open files". It created havok so I need to change something here to be able to use it. I just need to figure out what that something is.
I seem to remember the OS having a setting where you could configure the maximum number of open files. With MS-DOS back in the old days, I seem to remember you could configure that in CONFIG.SYS or something. I'm pretty sure modern OSes still have a limit on the number of files that can be open at a time, but I'm not sure where that's usually configured now.

I may need to increase my files in this case too but I'm not sure how
to do that on slackware. I'll investigate that.

Going back about 25 years I needed FILES=40 in my config.sys for the BBS. I splurged and put 50. :)
C run-time I/O now supports many more open files on Win32 platforms than in previous versions. Up to 2,048 files can be open simultaneously at the lowio level (that is, opened and accessed by means of the _open, _read, _write, and so forth family of I/O functions). Up to 512 files can be open simultaneously at the stdio level (that is, opened and accessed by means of the fopen, fgetc, fputc, and so forth family of functions). The limit of 512 open files at the stdio level can be increased to a maximum of 2,048 by means of the _setmaxstdio function.
It seems unlimited but it isn't. You can change this and with 64 bit you can use unbelievable (unnecessary) high amounts files at the same time. I think also this is why codes are becoming more lazy, alter limit, works, fine.
