Is anyone having trouble with the FTP server portion of Synchronet becoming busy often?


Mine will become busy for some reason and it send my system into 100% processor usage. I have to end task on the all of it in order to get it to stop. From the FTP window I can not stop it or anything the only to regain control is to end task on it. Anyone have any ideas as to why this may be happening?

In the FTP terminal window, are you getting excessive connect tries? I just tried mine remotely and I didn't go over 8% CPU usage with everything in the background running as well.

I used to get this a lot when Google's web crawler (a bot) was indexing my site. It had excessive logins to the Guest account. Also, because of the link randomization on the runemaster web interface link to the FTP File Library (that is to get past browser cache issues) the Google bot would just crawl the web version of my FTP files endlessly. Thinking each randomized link is a new page.

Look to see what IP is trying to login, usually it is easy to tell.
Example:

3/29 07:57:54p 2288 CTRL thread terminated (0 clients and 1 threads remain, 172 served)
3/29 08:11:13p 1856 CTRL thread started
3/29 08:11:13p 1856 CTRL connection accepted from: 66.249.73.151 port 59031

If it is hard to tell, I will usually throw it into this search to at least see what country it is from:

https://www.maxmind.com/en/geoip-demo

And then if needed, block by IP. Or, in the case of GoogleBot you could try a robots.txt file.

I had one that kept trying over and over. It would connect download a QWK packet then disconnect. And then try again right after it disconnected. I shut down the BBS and started it back up and then all the tries stopped for a while. I have had to do this twice today so far. I am not sure why or what is causing this.

I think I found where the problem was at with the FTP server. I had a system checking for messages on my system and there system was hitting mine every minute to two minutes and it was connecting constantly one right after the other and my system was having a hard time with this. I have since4 contacted the sysop of that system and asked them to reduce the amount of times and how often it connects and I will see now if this takes care of that problem. So far so good but I want to watch it for a few days and see if it happens any more.

Still, I doubt that should normally cause the CPU usage to get near 100%.

It's a relatively new bug introduced with the FTP-TLS feature. Supposedly, it was fixed in FTP Server rev 1.465. What revision are you running?

Have you rebuilt Synchronet lately, Rob suggested it was a bug, and Duece fixed a bug in the TLS feature a few days ago..

I am running the windows version not the linux version. I did another update today as of (3-31-18). I will wathc this and see if this takes care of the problem.

I assumed since you were having issues and a bug was mentioned (a new bug) that you built it yourself (or downloaded a daily built) please take it as that.

I have an issue with another sysop trying to poll for packets.
they are running a script to poll packets and is not able to poll packets. the ftp server just hangs up and does nothing.
When I connect to the server and manually type in commands pull or get it responds with command not supported. Is the script supported anymore in the newer versions of SBBS or do I have to run the qnet functions in the qwk setup in sconfig?

"pull" is not an FTP command, so I'm not sure you're tring to do.
