    Helllo All,

    Hapy to say that I ordered a cheap chinese v.92 exterior USB modem for my Linux box BBS and with sexpots for linux, I had it setup and going in under 2 minutes, I do need to tweak the init strings out, as of now I do not have it usining an ini file, just running straigt off the commandline, but even with that its working good, I want to tweak the init strings to get true v.92 and a couple other things, like shutting up a bit, it sounds like an out of control kid at walmart wanting a toy (or an out of control adult ham radoio operator doing the same lol).. and I just dialed it up to make sure it would answer with another phone and it did, when the carrier was dropped it took forever to physically drop carrier on the modem side I know that canbe cured through the init strings.. when I get time I will get this fixed and issues I'm having with ftelnet.

    (REE, I did find some errors with it, and I will post them later when I'm not so crunched for time).. going to be enjoying actually running the BBS off ONE machine and not two (was using an old windows machine to answer the phone for a while. now it's looking beautiful.. Just hope it works as good as it sounds and don't give issues my OLD 30+ year old modem was giving me.

    ATM0 should quiet the speaker. My US Robotics 56K v.92 external fax
    modem also has a volume knob on the side of it. However, I doubt it's
    going to work with the VoIP line...which is with MagicJack. However, my
    high speed internet is through Comcast Xfinity, so I wonder if it'd work
    with that. However, I mainly want it for fax...I can't see spending a
    large amount of money for a generic vanilla dial-up line each month.

    I know what yo umean, this number is a dial in only actual pots line required for the DSL to work, we never really used it (tried to, but people are too used to their cell phones so the phone stayed dead all the time) so I put it back to the modem..

    well we have a hell of two storms barreling down on us so i'm out. I'm hoping the wind does'nt get too bad tonight.. the ground is so saturated it would uproot more trees.

    It would depend on what codec they use. uLAW is the best, that is equivalent to a POTS line, where uLAW is used on the digital links between exchanges (In the US/Canada, ALaw, which is similar, but slightly different is used in EU/Australia/etc on POTS).

    No more POTS lines here. Only landlines available are VoIP, now that we've transitioned to the NBN. I was toying with putting a modem on the old POTS line that was doing nothing (Only had it to get ADSL), but realised it wouldn't be for long, the POTS line's days were numbered from the start.

    Yeah, we do use the landline here occasionally. And the VoIP is better, no compulsory listing in the public phone book, so telemarketers rarely find it. :) Only compulsory listing is the one that the emergency services use to look you up when you call 000 (our equivalent of 911).

    I got a Courier V.everything that I want to get a phone line for one of these days, but as for v.92, (and it's been a while, so forgive me if this is merely speculation) if you're referring to the 56k speed, as I recall from my time working at a small dial-up ISP in the 90s, the only way you can achieve a 56k receive rate is to have a special digital "pump" on your phone line, else I think the fastest speed you can get on a "conventional" phone like is 33.6k

    Back then our customers could connect and receive data at up to 56k, but they could only send data out at 33.6k. Now a days I think 33.6k in both directions is the best you'll get, but with digital phone lines being what they are, I'm not certain this pertains.

    At any rate, just my thoughts on the matter. Best of luck.

    Yes, from what I understand, you had to have a digital termination and feed the 56k in digitally. For an analog source, 33.6k is as fast as you can go.

    Back then our customers could connect and receive data at up to 56k,
    but they could only send data out at 33.6k. Now a days I think 33.6k in both directions is the best you'll get, but with digital phone lines
    being what they are, I'm not certain this pertains.

    With the right service, it would be theoretically possible to have 56k, and access to the digital channel is a matter of software nowadays, but the I suspect channel needs to be capable of 64kbps uLaw or ALaw, which is what the telcos were using for POTS at the time. Some VoIP services are setup like
    his.

    When I set up SyncTerm (I think I have an older version (1.55) -- I
    guess I need a new version LOL), I discovered the old Hayes AT modem
    commands (what memories of dial-up!). I also decided to try SyncTerm
    instead of MTel...but discovered I needed to modify/create the
    directories for downloads and uploads. For whatever reason, MTel stamps
    the time on the QWK Packet in UTC -- but SyncTerm enters it correctly.

    I also discovered that one of my users trying to logon to the BBS with wx1der.dyndns.org as the URL (using his data as a test) was connecting
    OK...but it wouldn't let him logon. So, I changed that in the program to tbolt.synchro.net -- and tested it with his data, and it worked. So,
    I've got to modify my logon screens with that info.

    Since I'm paying for the Xfinity deal, I might as well use it for
    either dial-up or Fax. However, I'd prefer it mainly for fax. The best
    dial-up callers might get would be 9600 baud. But, I have to check with
    Comcast to find out the number...and disconnect the MagicJack Plus line.

    The cost of the MagicJack is only $45 a year...compared to over $50 a
    MONTH for a POTS line...and that rate may be higher, since phone
    companies are raising the rates to pick up the slack for all the
    disconnection of landlines, in favor of cellphones. Yet, the remaining
    analog lines are being converted to VoIP, anyway. So, the best a dial-up
    caller can hope for is 9600 baud.

    I've had better performance with Comcast than I understand with DSL in
    the area. Whenever there's a power outage or lightning strike, the DSL
    modem is fried...and that has happened to my Mom more than once, with
    her AT&T UVerse service.

    The first Customer Support (I use that term loosely) that I was
    talking to, put me on hold, then disconnected me. Needless to say, I was FURIOUS -- and, I understand this happens all the time. Basically, they
    were going to make my Mom (who'll be 92 this fall) WAIT nearly a week to
    get her service back...she had no phone service for LifeAlert, 911, etc.
    So, when I called back, I gave them a piece of my mind, and told them
    what I was going to do, in spreading negative advertising on what I experienced. They said "all the calls are recorded", and I said "they
    damn well better be!!".

    I was contacted by a repairman, who was extremely nice, and apologetic
    for the actions of that Customer Support person. He gave us his private
    number, and card...and said "There is no excuse for them do to that, to
    an elderly woman with medical issues. If this happens again, you call me...either I myself, or one of my reps will be there within 24 hours".

    He also said if I called AT&T again to ask for their agent ID number
    FIRST -- because then, if the call is traced back to them, that person
    can be reprimanded, demoted, or fired.

    They had quite a bit of damage in northern Alabama the other night.
    Overall, it was "more bark than bite"...but "if you got bit", it was a
    big deal.

    We're getting into an unsettled pattern here, with maybe a week of
    nonstop thunderstorms and flooding rain. While I'm high enough that
    flooding isn't an issue, lightning is...and that means the BBS will be
    offline more than online, to end the month.

    Yes, that's what I remember hearing. There was something different about being able to use 56K, and I heard you had to have special equipment to send data at 56K to the receiving modem, but I never really knew the specific details on that.

    IIRC 56k required a specialized digital connection on the server end, and you couldn't run 48k up and 56k down at the same time. You had to choose one or
    the other with an init command. Realistically BBSes running over analog lines topped out at 33.6k, compression notwithstanding.

    48k was a v.92 feature. Very seldom used because it hurt your downstream rate, which was mostly what anyone cared about.

    I had US Robotics V.Everything with Vfast and V90/V92 support which actually supports 56k download speeds. Google on vfast us robotics courier modem.

    They even sell them now... not under the name of US Robotics, which in the end 90s was sold to 3COM, now another company still sells them. Unicom which names them USR. Which was the abbreviation we always used... USR V.Everything Courier modems :)

    With flash upgradable... awesome modems... Started with 14k4 and upgrade to all up to 56k...

    You just needed another modem that also supported 56k. That could be VFast, V90 or V92 protocol...

    I could even use 56k intercontinental with my USR Courier V.Everything.

    Using it with carding was only possible 16k8 due to relaying.

    I had several USR 56k with analog lines, truly PSTN. At that moment we didn't have digital lines here yet.

    I think what you are referring too where the first 56kflex and X2 modems. The v90/v92 modems did not need additional init commands. V42bis and V44 were excellent compression techniques in combination with V90/92.

    PCM streams are running over the analog lines.

    typo... Vfast = X2

    USRobotics also supported VFC (and X2) on those speeds but were only exchangable with USRs, V90 and V92 where working for all who supported this protocol. So during a time you had people with X2 and K56flex... later via firmware this was change into v90/v92.

    Sorry, not true. 2 consumer 56Kbps modems could only connect to each other over normal phone lines at 33.6Kbps.

    But from what I remember, 56K modems that you could buy in the store could only upload at 33.6K (they were 56K for download only). So if you were to connect to another such modem, you'd only be able to transfer at 33.6K with each other. To be able to actually send at 56K, from what I remember, you had to have a different kind of modem, which I don't think was available at any store that sold computer accessories. I thought it was generally only ISPs that had those modems that could send at 56K.

    there had to be one AD conversion to get the high speeds... if there was a DA->AD double conversion, then 56k wouldn't work... there could be only one AD conversion in the entire link...

    nope... it was up to the telco... if they converted your analogue connection to
    digital, and there was only that one AD conversion in the entire link to the remote, they you could get 56k speeds in both directions... remember, each direction negotiated its own speed and they would increase and decrease the speed as necessary... just because you saw 56000/43000 didn't mean that the sppeds stayed at those rated...

    if there was a digital to analogue conversion in that link, 56k stuff would not
    work... it had/has to be digital all the way... now, with today's mucking stuff
    and everything switching to VoIP, it is a lot different as now there is a digital connection pretty much all the way but you now have the CODECs in the way that we didn't used to have...

    Correct, now they are... but I was referring to the old times when analog lines were really analog and the modems were communicating with each other. No extra hardware needed.

    That really sucks when trying to get dial-up access with an external
    56k modem. I hear that MagicJack isn't all that good for that, but
    something like the Xfinity phone deal with Comcast, is better. I think
    there's also certain hardware and software to use for that. Even if I
    don't get dial-up access, I'd like to be able to send and receive faxes.

    I don't have any purpose for receiving and sending faxes, so that is not necessary for me anymore.
