• LOCAL GAME

    From Daryl Stout@1:103/705 to ALL on Sun Feb 11 11:52:00 2018
    I've noticed some of the "Synchronet Games", where the CFG file notes "localhost", but a port of 10088, or something like that.

    If I want that game to be on my system ONLY, and not linked into any
    others, can I just leave the CFG file as it is, and not worry about
    opening that port on the router??

    Yes, but you will need to be running the JSON-DB service on your system. Most of the games should have a readme.txt or sysop.doc file explaining this.

    Correct, and I believe a lot of them are mainly for networked scores. I have most of mine bouncing back to my local server.

    It varies. Some of them store turn-based or real-time game data in the DB, or use it for chat. In those cases you may be better off connecting to someone else's hosted DB, for more people to play against or talk to. Online scoreboards are much less exciting, so it doesn't matter much if you go local-only.

    I've got that enabled already...so, I'll set up the games, but just "localhost" them.

    However, with a stormy weather pattern forecast from now well into
    next week, that's going to mean very little time to work on the BBS.

    darn man.. RUN THAT THING in the storm.. I can understand taking antennae out of service, and YES I did lose a BBS to lightening, but it was my fault, I've NEVER EVER had any more issues with my BBS and storms, I have sure arrestors hooked to EVERYTHING coming in and out of the computer, plus extra grounding on the service lines leaving the back panel.

    I think what is meant by local is the fact that its on the host BBS only, Some games and walls can be set up through a port to make it multi BBS play.

    I think what is meant by local is the fact that its on the host BBS
    only,

    the term is localhost and it applies to all systems... not just BBSes... every system has its own localhost generally found on 127.0.0.1 but some also have 127.0.0.2 and more...

    however, this has nothing to do with the point that traffic to/from localhost will never get near a router...

    Some games and walls can be set up through a port to make it multi BBS play.

    this 10088 port is strickly for storing the scores in most cases...

    are other BBSes storing their game scores on your system? if not close that port! you don't need it open from the outside...

    Yes, it is. I wish the docs were a bit clearer on that.

    However, now with that port closed (and the JSON option disabled), can
    I still set them up, and have them on my system??

    No, you need the JSON service enabled but for local games they will connect to localhost. You only need to open that port if others from the outside will be connecting to your game.

    Games that use a JSON DB need a JSON database server to talk to. You either need to run your own JSON DB service locally, or configure the game to connect to somebody else's server.

    To run the JSON-DB service on your local system, you need this in 'ctrl/services.ini':

    [JSON]
    Port=10088
    Options=STATIC | LOOP
    Command=json-service.js

    Each game needs to have a database module configured. Some defaults are populated in 'ctrl/json-service.ini' and may need to be uncommented. In some cases, you'll need to add a new entry to that file, and hopefully the game's documentation tells you how (I'm fairly certain any of my stuff does).

    If you're just hosting your own database for your own BBS, there's no need to open the port to the outside world.

    Most games come with an INI file (typically 'server.ini', but it varies) that specifies the database server address and port to connect to. For your local database, the host can be 'localhost', and the port can be whatever port you configured the JSON DB server to listen on (10088 by default and in my example above).

    if you set them up, you will have to enable the JSON server stuff in your config... then make sure that each of the games that do JSON stuff talk to your

    Mark,

    Yes, it is. I wish the docs were a bit clearer on that.

    it is standard networking stuff ;)

    But, networking, etc. was never my forte' -- same with electronics.

    I can write a batchfile for the BBS, but my programming ENDS at
    setting the clock on the microwave oven. If I forget how to do that, I'm
    going to starve to death.

    if you set them up, you will have to enable the JSON server stuff in your ML>config... then make sure that each of the games that do JSON stuff talk to y ML>localhost on 10080 or whatever port you choose for that server...

    OK, I can handle that. I've got the port enabled in Synchronet, but
    NOT in the router.
