I'm normally not available for pages for chat, but when I am,
if I don't hit F10 to open the chat window immediately, and am
not aware of the chat until the user pages me, it seemingly takes
forever for the BBS to recognize it.

The split screen chat window appears, and it notes "Waiting for
[user name or alias] on Node #". Sometimes, it takes a good while
(I'm not sure how many seconds, as I never bothered to count), but
it's at least a minute or two...and most users aren't going to be
that patient.

When one Sysop logged on, I had the control panel maximized (it
normally is minimized, and I have to enter the Sysop Password to
restore it), so as soon as they got to the main menu after logging
in, I hit F10, and it opened the window, and went into chat right
then. But, otherwise, it takes awhile.

Anyone else having a problem with this??

I think what's likely happen is that the user is sitting, inactive, at some uninterruptable prompt when you've hit F10.

Most of the command prompts are "modal" (I guess that's a good term to use), meaning, the server/BBS/sysop can't interrupt the user's session. However, as soon as the user hits a key or there's an inactivity timeout, then the BBS will check for things like pending telegrams, local chat, etc. and a local chat "request" would force them into split-screen chat.

Some command shells have more interactive (less modal) prompts than others and will suffer this problem less.

I think there's room for improvement in this regard and will look into making more prompts "interruptable".

That reminds me, I remember seeing an item on your TODO list for possibly supporting external sysop-chat doors (such as IceChat). I used to use IceChat back in the day with my old BBS and thought it would be handy for Synchronet to support such doors, so that if I press F10 to chat with a user, it would run a chat door. These days though, I don't often chat directly with users..

That reminds me, I remember seeing an item on your TODO list for possibly supporting external sysop-chat doors (such as IceChat).

I think those doors still work fine, with any BBS, they're just not "integrated" with the sysop's control applications (e.g. sbbsctrl, umonitor).

Yeah, me neither. One-on-one, whether it be e-mail, facebook messaging, or chat, usually has me thinking: more people should be seeing this conversation so I may not have to repeat myself, again, quite so much. :-)

I think those doors still work fine, with any BBS, they're just not "integrated" with the sysop's control applications (e.g. sbbsctrl, umonitor).

Those doors do work fine when set up as a door to let the user page the sysop first. Setting it up that way would probably work. As a DOS door though, I remember it using the PC speaker to page the sysop, and I don't remember now if it would still use the PC speaker under Windows or if Windows would catch that and use the audio card instead.. Some PCs and motherboards these days don't come with a PC speaker (though they might have a header on the motherboard where a PC speaker would be plugged in).

I agree. Though it seemed that some users just liked to chat and get to know the sysop a bit.
