Are you running Synchronet v3.16 or later?

    You're ready for Avatars!

What are Avatars? Similar to personal icons and avatars in social media and web-boards, Synchronet avatars are small (10x6) "ANSI graphics" images that each user chooses or personalizes and are displayed in message headers and uploaded file details (with more uses possible in the future). Each user can select from a library of avatar "collections", modify selected avatars with an online "ANSI editor", and even upload their own locally-created avatar.

The avatars are shared across the message network (DOVE-Net) so that you see the avatars when reading the messages of anyone on the network, not just those using your personal BBS of choice. Sound fun? It is! Join in!

A fresh install of Synchronet v3.17a (dev version), from CVS as of Jan-13, should already have everything ready to go (no changes needed).

Most of you Synchronet sysops however didn't just instead it (from CVS) in the past 4 days, so for you, read on:

The setup/config instructions are here and vary only slightly for v3.16 (v3.17 is preferred and older than v3.16 is unlikely to be supported): http://wiki.synchro.net/module:avatars

The dependencies are mostly just in exec (*.js), so as long as you either perform a "CVS update -d" in exec or download a recent sbbs_run.zip (or .tgz) and extract the exec (and load) dirs, you should be good to proceed with the installation instructions which (thanks to mcmlxxix's cnflib.js) can be as simple as running "jsexec avatars install"

Looking forward to seeing your avatar of choice. Mine changes regularly (for testing reasons), but is currently my latest depiction of R2-D2. :-)

One thing I was wondering is, what if I choose one avatar on my BBS, then log onto your BBS and choose a different avatar, which one will people see on Dove-Net? Would mine on my BBS get overridden with the one I chose on your BBS or vice-versa?

People will see the avatar that you have configured on the BBS that you posted from.
(If you create an avatar on Vert, it will only show up on messages that you post *from*

Around here, there is little activity on any of the repeaters. However, we d RQ>hear a lot of travelers, especially in the summer, as well in April due to RQ>hams coming in for the DX convention here at the Visalia Convention Center.

Same here...most repeaters are quiet, unless for "drive time" or for
    "nets".

Our site is at 7500 feet elevation and can be used from the "grapevine" to t RQ>Turlock and Tracy areas along the CA 99 and I-5 highways.

Nice coverage. There is a wide area coverage repeater on Shinall
Mountain in western Pulaski County, and that's where the local Skywarn
Nets originate from. Plus, they link up other repeaters during their
    other nets.

Yet, while there is a Skywarn Training Net once a month, several hams
won't check into the training...but come out of the woodwork for "the
real thing". Then you get these reports like:

    1) The tornado sirens are going off.
    2) I have a funnel cloud that's not rotating (likely is seeing scud).
    3) It just started raining here.

Or they don't listen for a minute after they turn on the radio. A
special courtesy tone sounds when Skywarn is up...you wouldn't believe
how many ask "is the weather net up", when the repeater just said
    "Skywarn" or "Weather Net Up"!!

    Ray,

Our site is at 7500 feet elevation and can be used from the
    "grapevine"
to t RQ>Turlock and Tracy areas along the CA 99 and I-5 highways.

    Nice coverage.

We are VERY fortunate to have the site. We (the Club) have a lot of
equipment there, including the TNC's for my packet BBS. D-STAR, DMR, analog/digital combinations on many different amateur bands. We have an agreement with our hosts that we will provide emergency backup
communications for the area and we also provide backup Internet for them.
There is also a fire lookout tower there (just across an imaginary line)
inside the Sequoia National Forest in which the volunteers use a wi-fi
    hotspot we provide.

Yet, while there is a Skywarn Training Net once a month,

We have one here every Monday at 1930 local time on the Club's analog
repeaters (all linked at the same site on four different bands)

Then you get these reports like:

    1) The tornado sirens are going off.
    2) I have a funnel cloud that's not rotating (likely is seeing scud).
    3) It just started raining here.

We don't have many funnel clouds here and even fewer tornados, but we do
get them. Probably 3 in the last 10 years in Tulare County, one with very
minor damage here in Visalia near the Medical Center.

Or they don't listen for a minute after they turn on the radio. A
special courtesy tone sounds when Skywarn is up...you wouldn't believe
how many ask "is the weather net up", when the repeater just said
    "Skywarn" or "Weather Net Up"!!

Our "local" weather center (HNX) is in the next (Kings) county, a 30 minute drive from the house. They have several ham radios set up for use should
the need arise. It is sad, however, that last December they couldn't get
enough volunteers for the Skywarn Recognition Day, so it was cancelled. We
do, however, have Skywarn training provided by them occasionally.

Been looking around for a tool that can convert ascii to avatar, does anyone know of one that runs on Raspberry?

Are you referring to Synchronet's user avatars? Those are simple 6x10 (or so) ANSI/ASCII drawings, and I'm not sure there's a tool to convert any arbitrary text to that size.

Yes, Synchronets user avatars ... as I have discovered, there are a
couple online conversion sites, but those either make huge files or
distort it to unreadable :/ I have tried using PabloDraw but my
artistic skills are worse than my coding skills :-P
Guess I will just have to use one of the included avatars
