  • BBSFINDER.NET gone

    Well, it looks like the bbsfinder domain has been lost again. It was something else before bbsfinder.net -- and now the domain appears up for purchase. So, the "Real Time BBS List" deal with that is no good anymore...unless someone knows an alternative.

    And the bbsfinder.js external is not logging any errors (for me at least). Probably because http://www.bbsfinder.net/update.asp is still resolving, albeit to the park page, so it doesn't seem to throw an error.

    Evidently their parking page lets you throw any path and query parameters at it that you like, and doesn't respond with an HTTP error.

    Anyone still running a BBSFinder update client should disable it now. You're just throwing your old BBSFinder username and password at some new site every five minutes, and WASTING PRECIOUS BANDWIDTH! (Some of you may be running the one I wrote; /sbbs/xtrn/bbsfinder.)

    As for alternatives, I like bbs.guide well enough, but I don't think there's a real-time availability aspect to it. Did people find the "it's online right now!" aspect of BBSFinder particularly useful?

    Do we want a successor to appear? I'm not very good at computer, but I could prolly make something.

    Honestly I didn't use BBS Finder much, but I think it's useful to have some indication that the BBS is still around. That's something I like about the Synchronet BBS list page at Vertrauen - It verifies the BBSes in the list once a day to see if they're there.

    I can write a batchfile for the BBS, but my programming ENDS at
    setting the clock on the microwave oven. If I forget how to do that, I'm
    going to starve to death. :P

    For that matter, my HTML knowledge is very basic as well.
