    I am reading the page... does one of those optional settings turn on
    extended messages, like a "debug" mode, that might give more info about why
    a connection is failing?

    A TCP connection? Wireshark or something similar might be helpful there. If you're looking for Telnet option negotiation, you have to enable that debug output in the terminal server.
