    I thought I had read that Zmodem was a better protocol and had supplanted N>Xmodem and Ymodem, although I'm not sure about the X/Ymodem variants.

    I still think Zmodem is the preferred file transfer protocol...but for
    those systems that have HS/Link, you can do uploads and downloads in
    one whack.

    Back in the day, when dialup was common, bi-directional transfer protocols helped a lot, particularly for long-distance calls. These days it's not as important as it used to be.

    Back in the day, when dialup was common, bi-directional transfer protocols N>helped a lot, particularly for long-distance calls. These days it's not as N>important as it used to be.

    When I was running GT Power software (under dial-up), I used HS/Link
    to transfer the netmail packets (outgoing and incoming) at the same
    time. Now, Internet Rex does a similar thing, if you don't specify a
    -send or a -fetch option on the command line.

    After what the utility company workers did out here several years ago
    in slicing the cables (even though they were clearly marked)...then,
    they left the holes open, and flooding rain occurred overnight, ruining
    the cables...and how poorly AT&T treated my elderly Mom and I recently,
    in trying to replace her DSL modem (they fail in the event of a
    lightning strike or just a power outage), I can't see having dial-up on
    the BBS anymore...especially considering the cost for a vanilla line.

    a modem would work over voip but I have had success with a TiVo and
    fax machine.

    I do, and it sucks shit. Would not recommend. It's doable with the right settings and a provider that supports the necessary codecs and options, but flaky and no substitute for POTS.

    Surprising - for as little respect I have for the telcos as an organization, the outside plant guys were always the ones doing things the right way and getting things done. I wouldn't want to climb a pole or get into a manhole cover in the rain...

    I have wondered about that myself...and results have varied from
    reports that I've heard. But, I'd be curious to additional feedback on
    this.

    I have a phone line provided by my cable company, which at one point they called "VOIP" but now they call "Digital Phone". I have a 56K USR Courier connected to it, and I can make and receive calls at a full 33.6K with it.
