SRE will NOT reset.. I've tried all the little tricks like setting my time back on my PC clock, and alswo using a few patches.. still NO FUCKING RESET..

someone please... I know someone has gotten past then.. I want SRE so bad I can taste it.. CANNOT find it online anyware.. "Maybe for this reason" but there has to be a workaround. SHIT BRE WORKS.. FE works.. TAL works.. afaik these are all the Patel written ones that Dailey.. "Bought"..

amd yea.. I went to type that link and my browser pulled it straight up, this was what I was using to try to beat the bug.. the only thing I can think is that I'm Using DosEMU/FreeDOS so I'll try to patch/workaround on my XP machine then copy it over... because it will not work for me under Dosemu.. (the y2k fix) I can already tell I'll be able to get it to load just like BRE, etc.. It s just giving me the time error..

I'd like to try to get a patched, working distro out that can be used on emulated systems and newer systems.. dont know if Dailey took over this one too, or if it is still Patels. from what I can see it is all Patels, and I don'te see this game around anywhere (in use) I want to get it up, I've never played it.. but I heard its pretty much BRE/TW/TEOS hybrid.. well.. more like the muse for ALL those games.. :)

Well.. I run through some workarounds in DOSEMU and actually have the game loading on the BBS by directly creating a doorfile.sr in the game directory..

but when the game starts it states "This game is setup for local play only"

It also did this with a RBBS door.sys using SRDOOR before running SRE.exe

I've reset many times trying different options and get this same outcome..

I've read all the docs and cannot find anything to throw at SRE except HELP and SYSOP. neither does anygood.. I can play the game locally from DOSEMU fine.. BUT when I try to use it on the BBS with ANY dropfile, it will not allow anything but LOCAL play..

any ideas?

I've done this myself in the past, and it works.

I've gotten through all the Bull with the DOSEmu issues, and other stuff I've run up on and SRE is NOW RUNNING great on the BBS, I appreciate your help. I do believe I will enjoy this one better than BRE truthfully.

Thanks for your initation to help, I was missing one step when resetting the time, was actually easily enough able to do it using the 'date' feature under dosemu.

installed the first default version, then 6 different flavors afterwards, the main PITA was waiting for it to go through 18 years worth of maintence. 6 times.

as I stated in an earlier email, when I get time, I'm going to start working on some flavors of my own, sooner or later there will be close to 9 instances of it running on the system.. I know... maybe a little overkill, but thruthfully I like it better than BRE.

I'm fairly well versed with this under linux now, so if anyone needs any pointers I'll be happy to lend a hand.. I've even left a 'Default' Copy sitting that has been freshly reset for anyone who may want it.

otherwise it takes close to 45 minutes or so on each instance for maintainence to run the first time.

Here is the tutural from the author, he shows how to set your clock to 1999, reset the game, change date back to todays date, then play.. will take about 35-45 min for first time maint because its doing 18 years of maint at once.

notice I don't use SRDOOR here because I have Synchronet create DOORFILE.SR amd put it in game directory.

I first tried using door.sys and pulling from node dir then converting with SRDOOR but SRDOOR was'nt compatible with any of the door.sys or dorinfoX.def

SO this worked for me.

This is assuming you run linux/dosemu..

prolly easier under windows.. hard to say..

Err, SRE is the ORIGINAL SR Game from the Patels.

If you'd like to brush up on your SR Game history, I recommend my interview with Amit Patel:

BRE, Falcon's Eye, Falcon's Honor, and The Arcadian Legends are all sequels/remakes of Solar Realms Elite. In fact, many of the libraries Amit Patel wrote for SRE are re-used in those games.

Amit Patel lost the source code for SRE while he was in college. So SRE was NOT included in the sale to John Dailey. Dailey provides no support for it.

FWIW, I have Solar Realms Elite running fine on my system. My BBS is running on Debian Linux, and SRE runs via dosemu. I've seen SRE on many, many other boards. It is definitely possible to get it to run.

thanks for your info, and yes not much longer after this message, I do have it up and going, it was a very easy setup, and I love all the "flavors" included with sre.

I presume I don't get around much on other systems, the only time I have, I pretty much spend here.

I hate that they lost the source code, I really do like the game :)
