I managed to set up "The Smile Door" last night, using a generic
GTUSER.BBS dropfile, and Synchronet's "intercept I/O" to "Console", with
a batchfile. It was the first time I had seen the door from a users
perspective (I had originally seen it from the Sysop's perspective
only).

From the documentation...

"SM][LE Door is a graphics display program, which allows remote GT
POWER BBS users to view files containing ANSI codes. An ANSI driver is
required on both the host and remote machines. Music is also available
if the remote communications package supports it".

The door itself was created to support THE SMILING KIDS project, which
was a group of GT Power BBS users of the long gone ANSI/ASCII Art
Confrence. They collected new and used computer hardward, software, and
cash, for donation to area hospitals, for the benefit of hospitalized
children there. Ernest Debakey and Michael Arnett, who created the door,
and were part of the organization, passed away several years ago.
Several of Michael's ANSI's are in the door.

The ANSI collection was proprietary, and available to GT Power BBS
Sysops who made a contribution to the organization. You originally could
only run the door on a GT Power BBS. I had run GT Power under dial-up
for 12 years, and had the door online. With Synchronet's "intercept I/O" feature (for non-fossil doors), using a batchfile, I'm able to run it
under Synchronet. There are well over 500 ANSI files in the door to
view.

I wanted to let you know about the deal, as I think the topic was on displaying ANSI's with a door or utility.

I don't know if Mike Powell has it on his GT Power BBS (he's running
it under OS/2 Warp), but the ANSI collection with it is comparable to
the ones provided by Outworld Arts, when they had artpacks of ANSI and
RIP graphics years ago. Incidentally, all of those are in the ANSI/RIP
files area on my BBS.

Ironically, TeleGraphix, which pioneered RIP Graphics, went out of
business over 20 years ago. I have a registered copy of DeadPaint, a RIP Graphics viewer...I don't think it's registerable anymore.

BTW Daryl, There is a Javascript just for that in the CVS repo.. uses very little overhead, if any, very customisable, and very easy to setup.

I have the Online Bulletins Viewer door from T&J software on the BBS
for that, for ANSI and RIP graphics. This special door was
proprietary...and I don't think any other BBS has it...as it was
originally set up for GT Power. But, if there any former GT Power Sysops
out there who had that door, they can run it under Synchronet. It was
the first time I had seen the door from a users perspective.

them down the connection and the terminal on the other end will render them... anything can display them and no special door is needed... you could make a bunch of menus to display all the ANSI files instead of having some tool to automatically index and present the files in a list...

Yup, and JS and even baja uses so little overhead, plus like you state you could just build it into your command shell, and it would'nt look so clunky pulling up a specialized door that probably spits it out slower because it has to use ansi.sys and possibly a fossil driver.. I can understand it for "nostalgic" reasons if it is a door he has purchased in the past, just to keep it in use.
