Hello all,

We've been spared the worst of the Hurrican/Tropical storm (in N GA) Irma so far. but it is supposed to get a bit worse tonight, So I thought I would warn that if the BBS is down, its for this reason.

If it does go down and you get connection issues, I will have it back up ASAP.

Heavy wind and rains is usually our main issue up here because of the trees taking out powerlines, poles, etc. and other infrastructre. hopefully the Windstream infrastructure will hold up because we all know how long it takes them to get anything fixed.

God bless our Linemen though, I hope and pray for their safety.

Yeah, I have'nt been following its track, the last I heard it is going to go back out to sea hopefully..

That's my policy whenever there are thunderstorms in central Arkansas. Lightning dances around here like an ungrounded Faraday cage during
storms. Florida may be "the lightning capital of the world"...but,
Arkansas has to be a close second.

In winter, we usually get ice storms instead of snow. Then, with the
strong winds, the branches crash down on the power lines, putting much
of the state in the dark. Back in December, 2000...two back to back ice
storms put much of Arkansas in the dark, as it were...in some areas,
power wasn't restored until February!!

God bless our Linemen though, I hope and pray for their safety.

Amen to that. It'll take a long time to restore power to over a
million people in Florida alone, who are "in the dark".

Jose is doing a loop-the-loop. The models have been all over the place regarding where he will go...but he should head out into the Atlantic,
and just be "a fish storm".

I heard on a ham radio D-Star Net last week that there is literally an elderly couple in the Spokane, Washington area. His name is Harvey, and
his wife's name is Irma!! They were interviewed by the local paper and broadcast media.

I'm sure those names will be retired after this years hurricane
season. We're just past the halfway point, but we can still get some bad
ones even in November. Several years ago, a category 4 hurricane formed
in the Caribbean Sea, and moved EAST toward the Leeward and Windward
Islands. Normally, they get hit by storms coming from the east, moving west...this was unprecedented.

Also unprecedented, during Irma...the entire Florida peninsula...plus,
the central and eastern panhandle, were under Hurricane Warnings. The
western panhandle (with the exception of the extreme western panhandle)
was under a Tropical Storm Warning.

A large area of Florida was absolutely devastated...the Florida Keys,
Miami, and even around Orlando. Antigua and Barbuda in the Leeward and
Windward Islands had 90% of their structures destroyed.

Irma may have also caused significant damage to the Florida citrus
industry (never mind the tourism industry). If so, look for prices of
orange and grapefruit juice to go through the roof...just like the price
of gasoline.

Right now, that's what the models are predicting. But, each one (there
are at least 2 dozen of them), and they handle a weather situation
differently.

When Arkansas got hit by a major snowstorm on Christmas Day, 2012 (it
was the first time that Little Rock had seen snow on Christmas Day in 86
years (the last time was 1926)), the ECMWF (European model) was SPOT
ON!! The Global Forecast System (GFS, the U.S. model) was slightly off,
but it usually has a cold bias, anyway. By contrast, the NAM (another
North American model) MISSED it completely!!

Howver, with Arkansas winters, we normally don't get snow...we get ice
storms from freezing rain. Back in 2000, we had back to back ice storms
in December. Some parts of Arkansas, especially the rural areas, had no
power until February!!

The National Weather Service in Little Rock has an interesting read on
their website. While the heat index exceeded 100 in Little Rock several
times, the actual temperature never did. So, there's speculation that "a
cool summer means a cold winter". The article is at:

Personally, I'll see what the Wooly Worms have to say. Punxatawney
Phil (and possibly General Beauregard Lee in Atlanta) are in hibernation
until February. <G>

Admittedly, I like one good snow per winter, and I'm happy. Otherwise,
it's just a nasty mess. But, around here...if people see one snowflake,
one sleet pellet, one freezing raindrop, it's PANIC TIME!! The local TV meteorologist issues "A Grocery Store Warning", and there is a run on
stores for bread and milk (who wants milk sandwiches??), beer and toilet paper!! :P

There are several sites for viewing the models -- pivotalweather.com
and tropicaltidbits.com -- but to view the ECMWF, it costs a nominal
monthly fee at eurowx.com -- I like looking at the models for the
snowfall and ice (freezing rain) forecasts in the winter. Arkansas is
overdue for a major winter storm.

I told my elderly Mom (who's 91, and I do all the driving, shopping,
etc. for her), that "I'd watch the weather closely, and if I saw a
potential winter storm coming...she was to get me a list of what she
wanted, and I'd go to the store and stock up, before everyone else got
the idea that something was up!! A few years back, I was getting a few
last minute things at a local Kroger, and it started snowing outside
(big wet snowflakes). There was nearly a riot in the checkout lanes!!
