  • problen with incoming Internet mails and the "Umlaute"

    Hi Folks,

    in Germany and some countries in Europe we have special letters or types, call the "umlaute", this what you see, wenn I type: U, U, b, a O
    and so on....

    I have no idea, how I must setup the mailserver, so display this letters correct. I try Mail -> configure -> sendmail -> default charset "IBM852", but this change nothing...

    Is this all to set at the mailserver config?

    Display them where? If it's incoming Internet email, it's unlikely to use the IBM/CP437 character set which most terminal programs (telnet clients) use. If you receive an Internet email into the BBS (via SMTP) and then download that email to an Internet email client/reader (using POP or IMAP), then it should display fine.

    That is for outgoing/sent email (not incoming).

    Probably not. If you look at the header fields of the messages in question, they should specify the character set used. If it is IBM852, for example, then your terminal program will also need to support that character set. The BBS performs no character set translations (normally).

    your are right, I read the Mails inside the BBS.
    If the is no translation, its normaly, that I see rubbish..

    the /display/ of character glyphs is not something a (mail) server has to deal with... display of character glyphs is up to the client terminal software... it
    sounds like your terminal is probably a UTF-8 terminal where the world is headed these days... at best, your client software should convert the character
    glyphs to their UTF-8 equivelent before sending them to the video subsystem so they can be displayed properly...
