Hi all,

Is there a clean(ish?) way to move a message base from group X to group Y without
destroying the message base or it's settings?

I am thinking about re-organizing some things and am curious about the feasibility. I
have done some searching in this sub and haven't found anyone looking to do this, so I
wonder if I'm missing something obvious.

we never found one when max was first setting up her system... one part was that changing settings that are used in the filename of the storage files are not noted and used to rename the storage files... we had to make the changes and then remember to go rename the storage files... moving areas was also tough
because there's no way to tag them and then move them as a group... this lead to me figuring out how to generate NA files for the various groups so that those could be used to have and maintain proper security and access rights to the areas when they were imported... especially sysop only areas and others with similar restrictions... we're probably also spoiled by our old-school tossers like Fastecho, though... when we change something related to the storage file name or the directory the area's files reside in, FE will move and
rename the files for us... even with it fantastic feature, there's still some manual work to be done in the BBS configs... it is also great to be able to tag
groups of areas, by group or individually, and apply changes enmass to them... adjusting things like access security levels or even retention days is so much easier when they can be done enmass...

You can move subs between groups, but I'm pretty sure your users will lose their current scan configurations/pointers for those subs.

Using the copy/paste feature in SCFG, you should be able to clone a sub into another group and then delete the original. If you're using message group code prefixes, then you'll need to rename the old data/subs/*.s* files by hand to reflect the new group's code prefix.

That's cool - no users at this time = no pointers to worry about. ;-)

Here's what the online help (hitting F1) in SCFG has to say about them:

Internal Code Prefix:

This is an `optional` code prefix used to help generate unique internal
codes for the sub-boards in this message group. If this option
is used, sub-board internal codes will be constructed from this prefix
and the specified code suffix for each sub-board.
