  • Using html2text in mailing lists

    I'm hosting a few and gating one mailing list using Synchronet. One of the annoyances is HTML messages, because on the BBS side, they are difficult to read.

    I'm running SBBS on a Pi, so I have access to a lot of GNU/Linux utilities, such as html2text. What I would like to do is be able to strip HTML from incoming email, before it's posted to the BBS. Is this possible? Is it possible to insert html2text into the mail flow of Synchronet somewhere?

    Should be possible; take a look at 'ctrl/mailproc.ini'. I suspect you could do it by getting creative with your command line, ultimately piping to smbutil.

    We do appear to have an HTML-to-plaintext utility/library available in javascript. I'll see if I can make something work without requiring an external utility.

    Most HTML email is in multi-part MIME format with a plain text variant included. Synchronet can (and "should") display the plain text variant of messages when they are viewed in the Terminal Server (BBS side), automatically.

    If you're wanting to convert HTML messages that are not MIME-encoded, yeah, that can be done too, but I wanted to point out the MIME/plain-text support is already in there (in v3.17).

    Josh Renaud (Kirkman) has a python script that may do what you want. It's called:

    mail-to-plaintext.py

    Contact him and ask. I have it here but I'm not sure if he wants it distrubuted by any one other than himself. I know he has a github account under Kirkman.

    I wish, it was the same for internet e-mail (god, do I hate when someone send a html to me when I send them a plain text one)
