• IREX & NetMail

Ever since I have been using IREX, I have had a problem with it holding all
of the netmail. I have set Hold Netmail to NO, and I have set my route.rex as follows.

    route-to 1:275/100 1:ALL 2:ALL 3:ALL 4:ALL 5:ALL 6:ALL

No matter what I do or change, it always holds Netmail. Any Ideas.

    Thanks

Can you be more specific, like define "it"?

If IREX is a Blinkley-FLO style mailer, do you have SBBSecho packetizing the outbound netmail?

What version of SBBSecho are you running? What is FIDOOUT command-line you're using?

It refers to netmail packets. Netmail only gets held in the hold directory. Fidonet mail flow great.

Sorry Rob, This isn't for my Synchronet board, it's for my secondary system. Sync is doing flawlessly using Radius. I was just hoping some of the other sync sysops had run into this before. I'm sure it's a simple switch I am missing. Thanks for the reply.

That didn't work. I looked in the docs, and I don't see any refrence to the crash-to statement. I'm gonna take the route-to statement out, and try it with the crash-to statement only, see if that helps. If not, I'm back to changing things in the config one at a time and seeing if anything changes. Thanks for the reply, and I'll let you know if I figure it out.

    Update:
I took out the route-to, and replaced it with crash-to, and that didn't help either. It's funny, netmail works for all thge other networks, just not fidonet. I wonder if I need to just take out everything out of route.rex, and try to send netmail direct to everyone I want, but I really want all fido netmail to be routed through the hub. It's got to be something simple, I'm just not seeing it. No matter what I do, all netmail for fido gets put on hold, and never go anywhere. I'm truly baffled.

In your user configuration, do you have that node set to crash, and active?. You will need the route-to statement. I dont think that Rex has a crash-to statement. I dont have one, looking thru my old setup. (hard to do, in a windows 10 environment, Perhaps the ansi, or ascii, is not interpeted properly, but nothing lines up)

Yes, it's crash and active. I even tried immediate. I changed rex back to route-to, as nothing else worked. I'm using echodor as my netmail program till I find something better or we work netmail into the bbs program. I'm not good at all with mailers, never have been. IREX was the only thing that worked well for everything, except for this hold issue. It's not a big deal for me not to send netmail, but it's there, and I want it to work. IIRC, IREX uses concepts like frontdoor where you qualify mail in scheduled events... do you have that address listed in a scheduled event and is that event actually being executed?

Front Door works well, but you have to kludge it to make it work with
    the internet.

that depends on what one calls a "kludge"...

you should be able to run more than one... configure them for separate ports and set their internal semaphores to be different on one so they don't interfer
with the other... aside form that, ensuring that they have separate inbound and
outbound directory structures should be easy... i forget the details and my last winwhatever box is now dead so i cannot look at my radius/taurus installation and see what the config file showed about those internal semaphores...

No, this is my other system, my synchronet system works flawlessly, with no issues in netmail or anything else. This is for my GAP system, using echodor as my netmail reader. Netmail works fine on every network I belong to except fidonet. Fidonet netmail always get put on hold, and never goes anywhere. I tried running a seperate instance of radius, even made a new directory, and did everything seperatly, but it always was able to see the other one running.

that's because of those internal semaphores i spoke of previously... that's why
i wrote that one of them needed to be changed but i can't tell you what the config options were for doing that because of that system not working any more... vista ate itself, finally...

As far as Frontdoor, the only way I can make it work is to use
NetSerial, unless you know of a version that will use IP addresses.

nope, that's how you do it... properly set up, frontdoor can also dial IPs and domains that it sees in the contact number field in the nodelist or one can work with manual overrides using environment variables but that gets twisted real quickly... my main system has been doing that for years, though, ever since FD started beta testing that capability and then released it to the public for use...

i don't do IREX so there's not much more i can offer other than the previous suggestions about qualifying the mail for that system in the schedule blocks in
the route file that IREX has that's similar to frontdoor's...

    schedule @ *
    hold *
    unhold x:y/z p:d/q

the 1st line qualifies all mail in the '@' event which runs all the time except
    when another event is running...

the 2nd line holds all mail for pickup...

the 3rd line allows mail for those two specified systems to be sent instead of being held...

    schedule f x:y/z

this one line qualifies only mail for system x:y/z during event 'f'...

i'm guessing that irex has something similar since you guys were talking about route-to earlier... those statements are above my event schedule statements in my route files for frontdoor... maybe this helps? i dunno... it is all i have to give at the moment :)

I run Binkd showing in a Dos window <G>. It's not graphical, but I see everyting it does. Are you running Windows, or Nix? Irex has a problem with NIX versions later then around the time it was written.

that's because of those internal semaphores i spoke of previously... that's why i wrote that one of them needed to be changed but i can't tell you what the config options were for doing that because of that system not working any more... vista ate itself, finally...

OK, I'll play with that on the side and see if I can figure it out.

I've seen documentation of this on the interweb, but I can't find the actual version for download. I really want to try this version, so if you have any info, filename, or a copy of it, please let me know. I looked on definite solutions web site, and didn't see any reference to an ip dialer.

I run Binkd showing in a Dos window <G>. It's not graphical, but I see everyting it does. Are you running Windows, or Nix? Irex has a problem with NIX versions later then around the time it was written.

I run windows 10 on the bbs machine. I'm running irex 2.29, but I may upgrade to 3.31 to see if it helps. I read the docs, and it didn't mention the problem I'm having in the upgrade info, but who know these days. It's worth a shot.

I agree on one point that phpBB is one of the better ones of a bad lot. Yeah, your tricks help, but still fiddly, and if you lose track of what you've read, you may not have reliable status information. And the longer loading times for most forums I've encountered (possibly due to latency and the "chatty" nature of HTTP on complex pages?) is _way_ longer than an offline BBS message.

Actually, I do a DIRECT CONNECT with my FTN connects...for CyberNet
and FIDONet (same connect), WhisperNet, DixieNet, and GatorNet.

The QWK Networking Connects are done via Synchronet's QNET-FTP
feature. Those include RadioWxNet, GT Power, Micronet, BBSLinkNet, and VKRadioNet.

    So, I don't have a ROUTE.REX file with IREX 2.29 over here...at least
I didn't see one in the directory. The routing was set up with SBBSEcho
    version 3.

Since MESSAGES are the original intent of BBS's, I'm always looking
    for more nets. :)

It was made windows compatible, but I dont think it was native Windows. This seems to be confirmed that it runs in a DOS Command window. I just wish the menus would show properly instead of wrapping. I still go back to it once in a while to check on some stuff.

That is what it was set to originally, and yes I am using the
windows 32 bit version, although it is not really a windows program
    unfortunately

This is how I start and run mine so it uses a dos window. It works for me, and I don't have a readability problem with it. Hope it helps. Of course this isn't for synchronet, but it should work just the same. Then use your between bat to process the mail.

    @cls
    @echo off
    echo File Name: START-IR.BAT
    echo Board: Valhalla II
    echo SysOp: C.G. Learn
    echo Last Update: 06-10-2016

    echo *--- Setting Up System ---* path=c:\windows;c:\windows\system32;c:\gap\nodes\node1;c:\gap\utils
    set gapcnf=c:\gap\nodes\node%1
    set tz=est5edt
    set tic=c:\gap\utils\tic.cfg

echo *--- Starting Internet Rex ---*
    c:
    cd\gap\programs\irex
    if exist c:\gap\programs\irex\sema\rexbusy.0 del c:\gap\programs\irex\sema\rexbusy.0
    if exist c:\gap\programs\irex\sema\mail.sem del c:\gap\programs\irex\sema\mail.sem
    if exist c:\gap\programs\irex\sema\rexup.0 del c:\gap\programs\irex\sema\rexup.0
    rexw -DAEMON

I've been using Rex for at least 20 years :) Went thru several versions of Windoze and all worked flawlessly until some update last year in Windows 10.

OK, I was just trying to share what works for me in windows 10. OH, BTW, I fixed my IREX problem. Netmail is now flowing. After reading the manual againg for about the 50th time, it finally hit me. I added "unhold-mail 1:275/100 1:* 2:* 3:* 4:* 6:* 6:*" Basicly I took out the word ALL, and changed ALL to * and everything works. Must not like the word ALL like other mailers do.

holy smokes! yeah, we've seen that around these parts, too... setting up sbbsecho was one of those using the different format from what we're used to with frontdoor, fastecho, netmgr, ottrack and other FTN tools which all use 1:*
    instead of 1:ALL...

I must have missed the ALL part. I dont however, recall an unhold-mail keyword in Irex. Did you change the Route-to as well ?

Yes, this is now what I'm using, and it works like a charm.

    unhold-mail 1:275/100 1:* 2:* 3:* 4:* 5:* 6:*
