• FILE ACCESS LEVELS

From Daryl Stout@1:103/705 to ALL on Wed Jul 26 17:07:00 2017
At present, on my BBS, those logging on with Anonymous FTP, or as New, Unverified, or Guest (level 40 or less), only have access to:

    1) Reading selected areas in Message Board 1 ONLY (no posting)
    2) Downloading selected files in File Board 1 ONLY (no uploads)
    3) Using the information (non-score bulletin) doorgames

Verified Users In Good Standing, Donating Users, Ham Radio Operators, Visiting Sysops, and the Sysop Staff (levels 50 and above), have access
to the majority of message and file areas (depending on their access
    level), plus all the doorgames.

My question concerns the access level for the callers with level 40 or
    below.

Is it wise to set it to have access to a file area, but NOT to have
download access, unless they are a Verified User?? They basically could
SEE what was there, but could NOT download from it. Or would that not
    apply to Anonymous FTP logons??

Right now, if they want to know what files are online, they have to
download and unzip the list of all files (ALLFILES.ZIP) -- but, to get
the files desired, they have to apply for access.

I don't think it would really hurt anything to let them download files.. Are you worried about them using your bandwidth?

That's my view too. It's only uploads I don't allow, guests are free to download any file I have on the boards.

    ... 2 + 2 = 5 for extremely large values of 2.

Not really. I do ham radio nets in the evenings on the BBS
computer...but right now, I don't get that many logons per day, except
    myself.
