This line is the problem. This exact problem (with that name) was discussed here on DOVE-Net pretty recently.

Thanks for the help with this. Now I know what to watch for if this happens again.

here's your problem... it is the exact same problem that bill mcgarrity had just a week or so ago... those "!" are negations which means that anyone with a
name other than huawei is blocked... remove the two "!"... you also have juantech in there twice...

I have looked through the user editor several times and can not find this name already in use. Where can I find this so I can remove it so this person can re-create there account on my system.

Just taking a shot in the dark here, but did you take a look at /sbbs/text/name.can?

I think that file is for not allowing names, which I would assume it would give
a different warning than "duplicate" or "already in use". But it's worth taking
a look at I guess.

Real name

There are several reasons the Synchronet new user application process will potentially reject a real name:

1. It doesn't have a space in it (it's less than 2 words)
2. It has an illegal format:
a. Doesn't begin with an alpabetic character
b. Contains the ASCII value 255 or other control characters
3. Is identical to the BBS's QWK-ID
4. Is identical to another user's alias
5. Is contained in the BBS's name.can file
6. Is contained in the BBS's alias.cfg file
7. Duplicate real names are not allowed (SCFG->System->New User Questions->Question Toggls->Force Unique Real Name = Yes) and there's another user account with that same real name.

So... is this problem only happening with one specific user/real name, or all real name attempts? Have you tried creating a new user account yourself, as a test?

If all real names are rejected, then I would look at any changes you made to the text/name.can or ctrl/alias.cfg files.

I had to modify the Guest account to logon as GUEST USER. Some of the
doors won't let a user in with only a single name alias in the dropfile.
This happened with other BBS software I've run as well. I mainly use
either DOOR.SYS or DORINFO1.DEF -- unless a Synchronet dropfile is
required.

I don't let guests do anything but look around, they can't up/download or play BBSLink games.
If they want the goodies they have to register.
I have a few free file area's for my FTP server just enough to give them the want to be a real user.

The name.can support wildcard matching, so some characters have special meaning (e.g. '!', '*', '~'), so if you have lines with those characters in your *.can files, the pattern does not have to match the string (i.e. in this case user name) exactly. See this page for more details: http://wiki.synchro.net/config:filter_files

and I have not made any changes to the alias.cfg.

Okay, what about changes to your name.can file?

So Iam lost as to what has happened to cause this.

It came from a login someone was using, that's why I orginally added it not knowing the ! would create problems. Maybe that was the reason they were using it, to get banned so the system would get buggy.

Yup and being someone else had it also, it just confirms it. Maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel if Rob would consider hard-coding any login name starting with a ! not be allowed period and if the same IP does it say 3 or 4 times, their IP gets dumped into the IP.CAN file. Just a thought.
