• Error in User Editor

    Hi all,

If I want to deactivate the User Guest, this error is shown: http://www.bilder-upload.eu/show.php?file=fb85d6-1499473566.png

The Path is wrong, it must be:
    C:\sbbs\data\user\user.dat
    ^

I think, that will be in "\exec\useredit.exe"

No, actually the Win32 API supports forward or backslashes in file paths. That's not the problem.

I think, that will be in "\exec\useredit.exe"

Something else (sbbsctrl.exe?) must have the user.dat file locked. Try restarting the BBS.

    Hi,

Restarting BBS has no function to that.
It is possible to start the useredit.exe with options from Windows-console to see if there is a error message? If I start it from console, it found no user.dat

Oh yes, this is right. I forget this feature. :D

Interesting. Perhaps reboot the computer then.

You have to pass the path to the Synchronet "data" directory to useredit.exe. Like so:
    useredit c:\sbbs\data\

It's not normal. Something had your user.dat file open and locked. Without rebooting, you could have found that process and killed it, but rebooting was an easier instruction to give.

no... i just tested this by logging in to max's system with two other admin level accounts and both could easily user the ;UEDIT option and even on the same user record at the same time...entries are written as soon as they are complete so the record is pretty much live... it would be nice if there was something in place so that if you are viewing a user record and another operator changes it that the screen would indicate it was changed and maybe even reload it... possibly checking the record in similar fashion to the spinning cursor thing being emitted...

Because, after a fresh start of Windows and Synchro it always works.

as well it should since there are no files locked at that point ;)

Good point. But, every time I get a fresh "update" from Windows (at
least twice a month), I have to do a system reboot, and that means
shutting down the BBS and everything else...at least temporarily.

I use the IObit Product Line, including ASC Security, Driver Booster,
Smart Defrag, and the IObit Malware Fighter...which has its own
anti-malware engine, PLUS the BitDefender anti-malware engine, AND an anti-ransomware engine. But, I also "practice safe hex", being very
careful at what emails I open...especially if they have attachments, or

It will probably rarely happen that at the same time two sysops on the same user account screw around, but it makes sense to display the user account for the second sysops only as a view and not editable.

yes, it does make some sense for that but i remember the days back when i wrote
a dBase IV application for a corporate client and did that... they were not happy with that at all... it meant that the data entry folks had to set those cards aside and come back to them later... instead i coded a live update method
as i described... they loved it and it helped increase their productivity (of entering warranty cards in this case) dramatically... it was almost as dramatic
an improvement as when i had to redesign the flow of the customer data entry screens to follow the flow the data entry folks used...

if i'm understanding the translation, i already explained that i had three buffers... one for the original record as read from the database (OrgBUFF), one
for editing (EdtBUFF), one for reading from the database and comparing with the
other two (CmpBUFF)... to undo an edit, we reloaded from the OrgBUFF... CmpBUFF
checked the on disk database record every 5 or 10 seconds... it is what signaled to the display routines to hilight a field that had been changed at another station... the operator had a choice to abandon their edit OR to merge the changed data into their work (OrgBUFF and EdtBUFF) OR to ignore the changed
data and overwrite it when they saved their work... it gave them the best all around freedom to handle the data as they saw fit... made me a nice penny or two for the additional difficulty but the end result was very impressive and rewarding... these records weren't very large... it was really nothing more than an address book for the end-client with an address block for the reseller that installed the equipment and another block for the equipment description information...

on my main BBS system (RemoteAccess BBS), we use an upload scanner that scans the files are they are received from the users... i think there's something similar for synchronet, too... for files received via file distribution networks, they are scanned when their TICs are processed and the file moved to the proper file area or set aside for some failure reason... one of those reasons being failing the virus scan...

    Hi Tim,

    sorry... Total confusion. ;-)

How did you solve the problem?

You will need to quote the message or provide context. I have no Idea what you are speaking.

    sorry.

    Hi Tim,

Since I dont't allow uploads, I scanned my filebase when I added it.
How do you start the scan after an upload automatically?

There are options in SCFG to do that, I think its uner file options > testable file types.

can't quite remember.. but there are a few ways to go about it depending on the shell being used, etc.

not a problem... i was able to muddle through it :)

Your solutions with buffering ans merge two different records changes togehter is a good idea.

it was the best thing i could come up with at the time...

But, how does the first user know whether the change of the second
user makes sense, if I have understood correctly?

it was only address and serial number info... when they were notified of the change, they could view the record with the changes (just change the buffer being displayed)... if the change had garbage, then they could go on with their
changes and fix the garbage at the same time... it is hard to explain, now, some 20 years later ;)

    Which version do you use?

i'm using the last available beta from the new owner of the code... it hasn't had an update in a long while which is kinda sad... dunno what happened with the new owner... lost contact with him several years back...

I think, I must visit your BBS. :-)

    yup... bbs.wpusa.dynip.com... standard telnet port...

there are also three or four others running here on other ports but they may not be fully functional... i know the SBBS web stuff is hairy because of reverse proxying it... FTP is also troublesome since it has to ride on other ports than standard and requires some special options in the firewall for the FTP watcher...

we've got several 109.x.x.x addresses in our block lists but that one is not one of them and it doesn't appear to be in any of the range blocks... these were manually entered or acquired from one of the security lists we participate
