OK, incorrect settings for the QWK packet on the BBS end can cause this problem. These are my settings on Synchronet, which are working:

Which or [Q]uit:

It's one or more of the options I've marked with an asterisk that need to be turned on, or Multimail will give the error you show. I found out the hard way myself. :D

Yeah, those are what I was going for. I'm stil hazy as to how word wrap will work from composed messages -> what gets posted so I'd like an old-school program that'll let me not have to think.

Yes, pico/nano is a great editor on Linux, it was originally designed as a message editor afterall (as a part of Pine).

you login as a user and download a QWK packet which you then feed to multimail or any other offline mail reader that supports QWK... when you write replies, your multimail will generate a .REP packet to be uploaded when you login to the
BBS... you need to do this from a terminal program that supports upload and download of files...

Login to your BBS just like you would any remote BBS, download a QWK packet and place it in multimails inbox folder.

when you open multimail, if you have it configured correctly, you should be able to open the qwk packet.

Then after you have finished reading and replying you will create a rep packet and then login to your BBS and upload it.

I created FTP scripts that I ran in a batch file right before and after it would run multimail that would download and upload the packets automatically.

You need to "download" a QWK packet for Multimail to read, and when you've finished reading, use the upload function.

Well, you have a choice of using telnet/ssh/rlogin with a terminal program such as SyncTerm, or you can use FTP to download the <bbsid>.qwk file in the FTP root and upload <bbsid>.rep back to the same place. Those file transfers will initiate the necessary processing in the background. Another note about FTP QWK access is you will need to use telnet(etc) to configure your QWK packet and select the areas to download. That's only required for your initial setyp and when you want to change settings or areas you want to read offline.

I use Multimail this way, though my BBS is on a different machine on the LAN. The same strategy will work for a locally connected BBS, just make your connections to 127.0.0.1. :)

Never used it myself. I used the original QWK reader by Mark Herring. Still have a registered copy, along with the associated utility for PCBoard
