    Hey All,

My system has not been able to connect to Vert in two days, and now CVS, IRC, QWK, and Verts FTP are all down. Does anyone know if they will be back up sometime soon?

You must have missed the announcement that DM was moving his cable/internet service to the new house today. It'll be back up as soon as he gets everything up and running again at the new place. So just hang tight.

looking at my event window, between 10:06 am & 12:06 pm pac. time is when vert. went down, I use the cvs address.

Does anyone know if they will be back up sometime soon?

I know his systems are down, and his BBS web site at vert.synchro.net isn't loading, so I'm wondering how my BBS is able to connect & exchange Dove-Net messages right now.

I wouldn't think it would take 3 days to get his services back up (the move was

Tuesday, I believe), so I'm guessing he's having some issues. While I have seen

Dovenet messages, I'm set to connect to his system hourly, my logs are showing a lot of failed attempts to connect with a few random connects in between (ie: 3-4 hours apart this afternoon it seems). So I'm not sure what's going on.

Improve it how? I use my *.synchro.net address for DNS updating only, as well as some default settings that are used to connect to the synchro.net services. Otherwise I use my own paid for DNSs with free ones as backups.

The irc network was down too. If there were some more links between the different systems (fidoweb style ;)), that might not have happend...

Mine wasn't down, but my (and everyone else's) link to Rob's IRC service is/was. We can link our IRC service to any server we want, but most of us choose to use the default and link to Rob's system because it is, well.. the Synchronet IRC network.

Would you rather me link my service to Freenode where BBS and/or Synchronet discussion is non-existant? :)

I could possibly see something in the lines of the Synchronet BBS list where everyone else's IRC servers are passed around to all connected systems so you basically have a list to choose from.. but as far as I know you can only link your IRC server to one other server at a time (which I don't think is Synchronet specific - that may be normal IRC operation). When you connect to a new server, you disconnect from the previous one. I don't think it's build like

a client where you can connect to multiple servers at once, but I could be wrong..?

With that said, if Rob really wanted to - he could setup all the services that are linkable at a hosting facility or something, where uptime wouldn't be affected if he himself were to move his systems and/or internet, but that's completely up to him and then more money is involved.

Personally, with how much conversation actually goes on on IRC most of the time

(of course, there are times where there is quite a bit going on as well, but not nearly as often), I don't really think it's much of an issue losing the service while Rob moves. It will be back up shortly, and netsplits and idling will commence as usual. :)

i suspect he is/was talking about multiple DNS and possibly also Dynamic Domain
Update servers so that if the main synchro.net server(s) are down for some reason, then those addresses can still be updated and be accurate in the DNS...

The irc network was down too. If there were some more links between
the different systems (fidoweb style ;)), that might not have
    happend...

Mine wasn't down, but my (and everyone else's) link to Rob's IRC service is/was. We can link our IRC service to any server we want, but most of us choose to use the default and link to Rob's system because it is, well.. the Synchronet IRC network.

the problem, such as it is, it the netsplits when the main server that everyone
is linked to is down... each system then becomes its own little puddle unless the operators take steps to relink to other systems and join the puddles together to make a larger pond...

Would you rather me link my service to Freenode where BBS and/or Synchronet discussion is non-existant? :)

if someone were to create the channels and maintain them, it might not be that way... the sticking point being the terms of service and all the bots... many botnets use channels on the common IRC networks...

AFAIK this is true... if there's a netsplit then the operators link elsewhere in the network and get reconnected... i've seen that many times in the past when i did a whole lot more IRC than i do these days...

When you connect to a new server, you disconnect from the previous
one. I don't think it's build like a client where you can connect to multiple servers at once, but I could be wrong..?

the things about clients being connected to multiple servers and being in the same channels is the duplicate users and that each channel window is separate from the others... i don't think you can bond or combine two #BBS channels on two different IRC servers within the client... you couldn't do that back then, anyway...

With that said, if Rob really wanted to - he could setup all the
services that are linkable at a hosting facility or something, where uptime wouldn't be affected if he himself were to move his systems
and/or internet, but that's completely up to him and then more money

that is a very valid point, there :)

dove.synchro.net is a revolving hostname that goes between 2 systems: cvs (Debian Linux) and vert (Windows 10). cvs was brought back online on Tuesday, while vert took more time due to a hard disk failure. Some of my services are hosted on both and some hosted on just one depending on stuff. :-)

I beg to disagree. I have had occasion to save lives (from suicide), because I ran a BBS, and users felt like they could talk to me, as someone already entrusted with some degree of personal information about them (more so in my case, because of how my BBS was setup). Guess I was a bit like a digital bartender in a small, intimate bar - an ear that was there for people who needed it.

However, I don't see that as likely these days. There's a lot more places online for people to go for help now, and my new systems are quite different, though the potential is still there in the future. For me, the answer is:

    1. Get a static IP address, whether by paying a bit extra from your ISP or using other techniques (e.g. VPN).

    2. Use a reliable DNS host with geographically separated nameservers. With static IPs, you can keep your TTL relatively long (except when planning an IP change), so resolver caches don't time out too soon. Or if you're tech savvy, you could setup your own DNS service on a couple of VPSs in different parts of the world.

I use a VPN to give each BBS a unique static IP, and I have scripts that monitor connectivity and will attempt to re-establish the tunnel if connectivity is lost. Some of my names are hosted by my tunnel provider, others are hosted by my domain registrar.

    As do most sysops.

not something that happens often, and it's just BBS stuff. A few days of

    Agreed.

Re: DNS, it's any sysop's choice to go with the free SPOF vs. paying for something instead. And everyone loves FREE BBS SERVICES amirite?

But of course! That's gotta be a hell of a lot better than polluting CVS with shitting code! :D :D :D

yeah, have seen the traffic spurts and a post or two from DM... hate that he had a drive problem... that's the worst thing i hate about running a BBS or a server, really... those drives spin and spin and spin and do great but when they go from hot to cold during a "no power" scenario, they could have problems
coming back up... i've got some, here, that have been spinning for almost two decades with maybe 10 or 20 "no power" scenarios... none of them are making any

You must have missed the announcement that DM was moving his
    cable/internet
service to the new house today. It'll be back up as soon as he gets everything up and running again at the new place. So just hang tight.

Including his DNS servers, so everybody that uses a xxx.synchro.net hostname, is unreachable. Talking about a SPOF. :-(

There's a back-up DNS (dns2.synchro.net), not hosted by me, so hostnames should still have been resolving while I was down.

hmmm, you might add that to the dyndns.js file (after you get the ok first)

I think you misunderstood. There's a back-up DNS server at dns2.synchro.net, so *.synchro.net can still resolve to IP addresses even if dns1.synchro.net is absent/down. This is not to say that dns2.synchro.net is running the dynamic DNS update service (it is not). The Dynamic-DNS update service is only running at dyndns.synchro.net and this is separate from the DNS server.

just looked in the dyndns.js and that address was not listed in it... just added it just in case

You'll want to remove that as dns2.synchro.net does not run the dynamic update service.

I remember transferring my registration at one stage, so I'm sure that can be done (I have a registered mIRC too). Yeah, worth the effort, mIRC under WINE is pretty transparent. I tried native IRC clients on both Mac and Linux and kept going back to mIRC. :)
