students asked questions about things they should know and most have
    no idea
To them, MEMORIES is NOT. :P All they live for is the present...and
don't even care how we got here.

To most people anything that happened before they were born isn't
    worth knowing.
And sometimes history is presented in such a dry, dull, boring
fashion with just names and dates to be remembered for a test then
    quickly forgotten.

That's been the case for decades, even generations... One does have to
have some sort of connection to the past for it to seem important... I
had one history teacher that made history seem deadly... and then
another one that showed us that history was the current events of
yesterday... and connected to the current events of today.... ;) What
really made history come alive for me, though, was realizing that some
of the major and the not-so-major personages were related to me... and
    they lived through those events...

I say, if we don't remember the past our future is
in peril. Santana, I think, the writer (not the singer) said if we
forget our history we are doomed to repeat it, or words to that effect.

It's indeed easier to avoid the pitfalls if one is aware of them...

Sheesh, there are many kids today who don't know who their
grandparents were, what they did, where they came from, etc.

And that is just plain a shame... I was fortunate to grow up in a family
that enjoyed the family stories of years gone by... and recounted them
often... Both sides of my family had researched some of the genealogy,
that I was able to tap into once my interest was aroused... I was also fortunate to know all my grandparents, and some of my great-grands...
