A lot also has to do with inflation. A gallon of .33 cent gas in 1970 would be about $2.15 cents today.
In addition you have various taxes, etc.
I enjoy talking to young folk and telling them when I started working full time (1968) I made about $50 a week, $200 a month. Out of that I paid rent, utilities, bought a car, gas, clothes, food, etc and still had some (not much) left over.
They think of salaries today and something costing .25 cents then in relation to today.
Sure we made less then, but things cost less as well.
There's a local FB page and once in a while a menu from the old days will be posted with say hamburgers .30 cents. The young see that .30 cents in relation
to today's .30 cents, not what .30 cents bought 40 years ago.
