Sometimes the tax just gets built into the "advertised" price...

They do that in Europe, the tax is built into the price of the
object be it food, clothing, etc.

In England and the commonwealth, there's that VAT that may (or may not)
be posted, but always is incorporated into the price as paid/advertised...

I think the "hamburger tax" in the Little Rock area is now around 12
cents on the dollar. It's a combination of city, county, and state
sales tax...plus a fund for the area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

I've seen that sort of tax added to hotel bills various places...

In WV only the state can tax most things. (The county can tax real
estate and some personal property (cars, etc).

I think all states have something similar... only the details tend to change.... ;)

Huntington has a users fee tax of $5 a week on income earned in the
city. (Regardless of the amount earned. One could make $1-one million for that matter and "taxed" $5.) The money is supposed to be used for public services (streets, police/fire, etc) but most of it seems to disappear down a rat hole. Its not really fair since someone with
high income pays the same as someone working part time minimum wage,
and vice versa. The fee was started years ago when the state wouldn't allow city taxes but nothing on the books about a fee.

Always some way around things... ;0 I'm surprise that they didn't
decide to make it a graduated fee, to make it somewhat more equitable,
to say nothing of lucrative... ;)

A lot of people here live across the river in Ohio which has lower
and some times nonexistent taxes and fees that WV charges.

Another pretty typical thing.... people will often choose based on what
sort of fees/taxes they'll encounter... Even within a metropolitan area,
there are choices for property taxes from one locality to another...
with some fancy suburbs being much higher than, say, in the city
proper... :)

Of course we have the hotel tax, which has been longer than anyone
can remember, which is generally hidden in the charges somewhere
visitors don't know how much they are paying.

Most places I've been, it's not terribly hidden, though one does have to
read one's bill carefully to see it.... :)
