Sometimes the tax just gets built into the "advertised" price...
especially at fast food places... :)

Now, many of the fancy restaurants are automatically adding in a tip
tax (18%), before you get served...no matter whether your
waiter/waitress was efficient or not. I've made it a point to visit
those type of places only ONCE.

And not only fancy places... some buffets will add in the tip if the
party is over a certain size.... Usually they'll make it known ahead of
time... That, of course, could backfire.... Like you, some people just
won't come again.... and some people, who might have tipped better (20%
or more), won't add any additional tip, figuring they'd already decided
for themselves... As you say, it doesn't allow for a tip based on the service....

I've seen that sort of tax added to hotel bills various places...

Wherever they can nickel and dime the folks, they'll do it. They
figure if you can afford to take the vacation, you can afford the
extra fees.

Actually, I think it's just a case of figuring they can take another
tax..... I've run into it for years, back when I'd go to genealogy
conventions, and similar things... not really a vacation, but certainly
already a fairly costly affair...

Well, of course... paying taxes is more important than just about
anything else, it would seem.... ;0

Wasn't the income tax declared unconstitutional at one time??

It was argued back when first imposed that it was against the
consitution... but as you can see, that was run over roughshod... ;0

Here, the state doesn't charge tax on clothing, but the counties do...
there's often a week or two county-tax-free for back to school... :)
The tax-free also applies to fabric that one would use to make said
clothes, too... :)

Interesting.

Each state has its own quirky variations of taxation....

A tip is generaly given without claim or demand. I usually tip 10-15%.

Depending on the milieu and the service, we often tip 20%... but then,
our son for a while made his living being waitstaff, and influenced how
we'd tip... we'd leave less if the service wasn't good...

The 18% you were talking about sounded like a demand. That's a non starter, I would find somewhere else to eat.

Lately, I've seen restaurant checks that show at the bottom suggested
tips, showing what the tip would be at 15%, 18% and 20%... that doesn't
bother me so much, since it gives you something to calculate from... As
I told Daryl, some places impose it based on the size of the group...
probably influenced by the stark reality that large groups often tip
very poorly, like less than 10%, or sometimes not at all... I remember
one place though, that when you'd go to pay the bill, they'd let you
take off their imposed tip and pay what you'd prefer to pay....

I'm more upset with places that add the tip to the bill, and don't let
on that they've done it, and unsuspecting persons might tip on top of
that.... often when the service wasn't great at all... that is just
downright deceitful....

I think that servers should be paid a decent wage to begin with but
that isn't always the case.

In most cases, the tips are supposed to make up for the indecent wage
being paid them....

I don't care for the idea of all tips going into a community pot.
Then, those who busted their butts off in their job get the same as
the slackers.

I was a dishwasher at one time and was given about $15 a week in tips
from the pot, apparently. I didn't work there very long.

I know of some places where the dishwashers and busboys are given a
percentage of the total tip take... and some others where the wait staff voluntarily share some of their tips with the service staff... And I've
known some people who will give a tip along with their bill, and then
also give cash to the waiter/waitress, saying this is for YOU... :)

I saw a video recently where a topic was tipping.
Among other things only in the US is tipping seen as automatic. In Europe its included in the price (thus taxed since its a known amount). In Asian countries its seen as an insult since the customer seems to think only by tipping they would get good service.
(The question I had on this point was then shouldn't the server be tipped BEFORE the meal and not after?)
One point brought out was a survey of servers who said they preferred small groups of one or two people. Over that the customers don't tip more since service to all was the same. So instead of 10 tips, a party of 10 till give one, which is less than what 10 individuals would give.
(I knew a real tightwad several years, {no not me, but he was an inspiration} who was not allowed to go back to the table when we were paying because he would pocket the tip).

Before 1913 there was no federal income tax. Taxes were collected on tariffs
on imported items.
It took, literally, an act of congress to make the 16th amendment to the constitution.
Before then there were temporary federal income taxes to fund one thing or another, such as the Civil War in the north. These usually only lasted a few years.
Not sure about state laws, since they vary. And some states (FL and TX come to mind) that have no state income tax. They depend on sales taxes, property taxes, etc.)
Some states, like WV, have a luxury tax on items that are deemed luxuries. In WV cars are taxed more since they are deemed a luxury.
