there are also lots of other regulations that make it harder to keep a

I can't see why a able bodied person would want a car in the city.
There are buses, cabs, subways, now Uber and all.

The only reason I can think of needing a car would be taking home
large, bulky items from a store. But how often does that happen?

I'm sure it depends on the person.... and those more likely to be
getting large bulky items from regular stores probably don't live in NYC proper, but further out where cars would be more useful.... :)

(And wouldn't those businesses (other than big box stores) offer some
sort of delivery service? Need to ask a guy I know who lived in NYC
for years).

My brother used to work for an art gallery in NYC... they did have a van
they used for delivering larger works of art or furniture... :) And I
know that it is normal for appliance stores and furniture stores and the
like to have delivery service... :)

Overall it would seen cost effective in that event to rent a car.

My brother has found it cost-effective to rent a car for trips for
family visits.... and I think he goes over into NJ to rent the car to
make it more so... :)

Several years ago I brought new linoleum for the kitchen from a local business.
After I bought it asked if they had delivery services. No.
I asked if I could leave it there till I found someone with a car to pick it up and the salesman said one of his employees could drop it off on his way home, which he did. I went to the street and picked it up.

One of these days when I have time I plan to make a grand tour visiting people all over the country I haven't seen in ages. I haven't decided if I will take the train for the longer hauls of just rent a car.
One person I hope to visit is an old college roommate who lives in Manhattan.
My plans are to find somewhere in Jersey to park the car for a couple of days rather than take it into the city.

That would be a fun trip... :) I suppose you could just plan to rent a
car for places that you'd be staying a few days.... :) Unless you

They thought that about me at the silkscreen print shop. They could
take time off, but I could not...no matter what the situation. They were
in shock when I went in that day in July, 2004, and announced I was resigning....my declining health would not let me work anymore. Now,
they'd have to find some other flunkey to do the "dirty jobs that no one
else would do, or wanted".

Sounds to me like you should just plan your tour, and then tell your
boss that you are taking x weeks vacation... When s/he says "oh, but
you can't take that much at once", you just say "remember? I'm
retired... yes, I can"... ;)

We have a big hospital here where security does a lot of extra stuff, worked
hard and put away wet. They can't keep anyone there. I half jokingly refer to
it as purgatory. Others have a stronger word for the place. Thankfully I have
never been spent there.
Funny happened one time.
I had sprained my ankle at work and sent to this hospital to have it checked
(workers comp, CYA, etc). I was in uniform. A group working in ER didn't know
me but saw I had bars on my collar.
At one point I was waiting to be called and playing solitaire on my phone. One by one they passed by checking me out, just looking and going on their way.
I would acknowledge with them with a nod.
I decided to play with their minds.
From a distance it looked like I were texting or something, so I would glance around and see several looking in the large windows at me and I would play a few cards, look around and they had scattered.
One could come back and watch, I would look around, play a few cards and he would disappear.
The only time a ranking officer was there, other than their super, was if there were a problem.
Well, it was amusing to me. :)

Oh yeah, and some extra.
My family owns some property where gas is being drilled for and I have like 1/12 of one percent interest and last summer a nice little offer was made for a
five year lease for the mineral rights, thanks to fracking. I got enough from that cheque for a long trip. :)

Oh, I don't know... they'd probably want you right back there, since no
one else does it quite so well... ;) And whichever replacement(s)
they'd put there in your absence will have just quit (again).... :)

I found it amusing, too... :) And there was a problem, just not with
their work... but with your ankle... ;) An amusing way to fill the wait
time, which otherwise can get quite boring... :)

Except that you don't let money escape the confines of the bank
easily... <G> I suspect that only a relatively small amount of that
would be needed for your trip, especially knowing your reputation for frugality... :)
