Its like my weekend job. I was asked in June to work "one weekend"
at the Bio-Tech building (affiliated with the med school) and still
there. There isn't much to do but warm a chair. Occasionally answer
inquiries at the main door.
Not a lot that has to be done... but there needs to be someone there
to take care of the little things that pop up every now and then...
The only thing I can think of off hand that's happened is one night
there was trouble with the heat during our cold wave a few weeks ago
and maintenance had to be called out. That wasn't on my shift.
But I take my laptop and do things there that I would be
doing at home, since have wifi access, and getting paid for it. :)
Double benefits... and the occasional person to talk to, besides... ;)
Most of the one's I speak to are in passing. They enter the
building and pass my desk to the elevator. I'll greet each one and
that's pretty much it. And that runs to maybe a dozen people on a busy day.
At least I'm inside, warm and dry. I've paid my dues in the cold,
rain and snow. Now let some youngsters learn the joys of that. :)
The perfect retirement job... ;) You get to call the shots now, and
only work the cushy jobs... ;)
Ya got that right!
I often joke since I'm retired I can't really be fired and that I
have the boss right where I want him. :)
But, had it happened on your shift, you would have been there to deal
with it... :)
Exactly... You are doing him a favor by coming in... it's not your JOB
to do it any more... ;)

We had a big snow mid week, well big to us, and called to fill in
for a woman who couldn't get off her hill due to the ice and snow.
No one cleaned off the steps into the building so I did and told
others "I didn't want someone to slip and fall. (pause) Because then I would to write an incident report, all that paperwork, etc." That
always gets a laugh.
I used the same line often in parking when
helping someone out of some place they didn't belong only then it was "wait, someone one might run into your car. (pause) And I would have a report and all that paperwork". Most of the time the people got the
joke right away, others had to ponder it for a second.
One time this student crossing a street darted in front of a car that
was barely able to stop in time. The driver commented on how that was close he had nearly hit the kid. I said, "Oh, don't worry, there's
lots more where he came from". :)

I got a request yesterday to train new people in parking. After I
left training was spotty at best. It's only for three hours a day for five days. I know more about the ins and outs than anyone in the
entire department. When I would pop up on campus for something
people would ask why I was there and I always reply "I've wormed and wheedled my way in so deep Marshall is lost without me." :)
... I've found a great way to start the day - I go straight back to bed!

So deep, and so long as well... ;) For professors and presidents, they designate as emeritus.... meaning, ok, so you've retired, but we still need to get more work out of you... what will we do without you...?

It was great being back in parking, which I really love. And being

It was like I had never left. Employees were glad to see me.

I loved the looks I got that said "Oh no, he's back!" :)
