with the new time. Usually within the original hour. And they even
have people who work evenings and weekends, at no extra charge.
Apparently it varies from locality to locality... I have friends that
live in other parts of the country that have had nothing but trouble
from Comcast.... But you have indeed received good service from
    them.... :)

I have to say that within the last 15 years their service has gotten better. I might need a repair once several years.

Probably helps that you don't need repairs often... :) And maybe you
    just get lucky, too... ;)

We had problems once where the cable wires on each floor of my
building fed into a box in the hall, then a wire leading outside to another box and that to the pole. People would break into the hall box and connect themselves, sometimes going so far as to disconnect a
paying customer. They generally only got "free" service a short time since the repair guy would trace that tapper back to their apartment,
snip the wire at the wall and rip out the wire from their place to the box. :)

Did the cable company make it less tempting for them finally...?

A cable company here years ago wouldn't send a repairman,
for whatever reason, for weeks for repairs. (That was when broadband
was a dream, it was just for tv and that was for 12 channels.)

They probably knew they could get away with it....

And I no longer have net withdrawal since the city has a deal
with Comcast to provide free wifi in certain areas of town, which
includes me, so I just use the laptop then. (If worse came to worse I
could take the laptop to campus where I have a free wifi account).
    That's even better... :) I'd guess you'd still want your for-pay
service for secured connections, though.... ;)

I have a secure account at Marshall and two accounts with the city.
One is unsecured, the other is secured.
My pc is hard wired but everything else has wireless.

The other secured accounts are safe for sending sensitive
information...? Or don't you ever have to do that...?

    The bad old days....

I was telling some story once about something, how it wasn't like
today and the other person said "Ah, the good old days". I replied I preferred to think of that incident as just "the old days". :)

Yup... there were good things and there were bad things.... just as it
is now, just the precise things may have changed for the better or the
    worse... ;)

The last time I needed service was around May when my modem, without warning,
    died.
The only problem I had was chatting on the wifi laptop with a customer service rep who wanted me to go though this routine of shutting down, re-booting, etc. I know enough to go through all that before I call and told her so. Well, nothing against her (I assume a she from her screen name, one of
those strange ones that seems slightly African) she was merely reading a script
and pushing a few buttons which showed I was getting a signal.
I finally convinced her to have someone come check it out. It took him less than 10 seconds to say, "your modem is dead" or words to that effect. He ran a
couple of tests, replaced the modem and back in business.
I had an old pre-router modem that was credited as being returned which I still had. He said to go on and keep it or toss it, my choice.
    Wanna buy a pre-router modem, cheap? :)

Yeah, they would have to string their own wire from the tv to the box in back. :)
And the box on the outside wall is about 12 feet or so off the ground and need a big ladder to access it. :)

Only when I'm paying a bill, banking online, etc. That is done ONLY from the desktop.
And no thank you, I do not want a mobile bank app.

Yup, they have to follow their script.... for the basic
troubleshooting... By the time we call in something like that, Richard
has thoroughly vetted all of that, too...

I finally convinced her to have
someone come check it out. It took him less than 10 seconds to say,

Dunno as I have any use for it, either... ;)

Those both should make it less enticing... especially the needing a tall ladder... ;)

That was the sort of thing I was wondering about, in particular.... I'd
not want to do that on a wireless, even were I in the practice of doing
it online (which I don't, either, actually)... :)

And no thank you, I do not want a mobile bank app.

Nor do I... and I also don't have the smartphone on which to place such
    app... ;)
