I have an app on my Android phone called "Call
Detector". It STOPS calls from scammers, telemarketers, collections,
nuisance calls, etc.
There is also a new do not call site available, forget the url.
Something .gov.
BUT, telemarketers are getting around that so when a unknown number
comes in it will show up as a local (or within your area code). People think its someone they know calling and answer.
They spoof numbers now... Sometimes it's been our name and number
showing up... clearly not true.... <G> And I know that's happened to a
number of other people, too... Recently, I got one that was some
computer voice, but with a local number.... Curious, afterwards, I
called back the number, and it turned out to be a non-working number....
funny, that.... <G> Did it twice, even, just in case.... ;)
If a number comes across I don't recognise I don't answer, since it
goes to voice mail after four rings. IF someone I know they can leave
a msg and I'll get back to them.
Generally when it stops ringing on the fourth ring its a
telemarketer. Joe
We don't have voice mail or an answer box set up.... Many numbers I have
in our directory (as part of the phone itself), so the real name does
show up.... others, I tend to recognize, even when it just comes up
wireless caller.... Others, I don't, but I do still answer, in case it
is someone I do want to talk to.... but I don't fall for the scams,
whether computer generated or actual people.... and the real people but
in a call center scammers get told politely No Thanks... And if they
are too persistent, they get a more emphatic no thanks and a please take
us off your list... They get around the do-not-call list by not
actually selling anything, just offering estimates for insurance, home
repairs, etc... and/or they act like there was a prior relationship,
which would justify their calling.... ;)
