I know people rag on cable companies for being late, etc. But I have to commend Comcast for being on time and within a few days. (This is a unpaid comment.)
I dropped tv several years ago (I don't even own one and no desire to have one) but have cable internet.
The last couple of times I've had problems (all but once outside) I was told someone would be around within three days and at a certain time. And by golly they were. Often it was two days (which is reasonable, I mean I'm not the only
user in town) and almost to the minute. If the guy is going to be more than a couple of minutes late I get a call with the new time. Usually within the original hour. And they even have people who work evenings and weekends, at no
extra charge.
And I no longer have net withdrawal since the city has a deal with Comcast to
provide free wifi in certain areas of town, which includes me, so I just use the laptop then. (If worse came to worse I could take the laptop to campus where I have a free wifi account).
And no, I don't miss the old days where one waited a week or more for repair and the guy came and left a note when one was gone a few minutes while taking out the trash. :)

to several central Arkansas businesses, who have done me well over the
years.

There, I said it and I don't care. :)
I do depend on the net for so much regarding news, entertainment, mail, etc.
And there is such a diverse view of things, from one extreme to the other, and I wouldn't want it any other way. Free speech/press and all that.
But while I am on the computer a lot, doing many different things unrelated to the Net itself, I am not one who has to check a social network every minute,
or have any new messages ding on my phone, etc.
I've sure you've noticed these days after a group of people have been talking
for five minutes, sometimes less, one by one the phones come out, the heads drop down, and so on.

When I have a problem with most anything I prefer to speak to a real person, not chat about a problem. With a chat its type then get the "responder is replying" and stare at a screen for a minute or more.
I'm an early riser, if I'm not up by a little after 5 I think half the day is
wasted. That's when I'll call some 24/7 repair line since nine out of 10 times
I get someone by the third ring and not get "response time is three hours and 22 minutes" or the like. :)

Apparently it varies from locality to locality... I have friends that
live in other parts of the country that have had nothing but trouble
from Comcast.... But you have indeed received good service from
them.... :)

I have to say that within the last 15 years their service has gotten better.
I might need a repair once several years.
We had problems once where the cable wires on each floor of my building fed into a box in the hall, then a wire leading outside to another box and that to the pole. People would break into the hall box and connect themselves, sometimes going so far as to disconnect a paying customer. They generally only
got "free" service a short time since the repair guy would trace that tapper back to their apartment, snip the wire at the wall and rip out the wire from their place to the box. :)
A cable company here years ago wouldn't send a repairman, for whatever reason, for weeks for repairs. (That was when broadband was a dream, it was just for tv and that was for 12 channels.)

That's even better... :) I'd guess you'd still want your for-pay
service for secured connections, though.... ;)

I have a secure account at Marshall and two accounts with the city. One is unsecured, the other is secured.
My pc is hard wired but everything else has wireless.

The bad old days....

I was telling some story once about something, how it wasn't like today and the other person said "Ah, the good old days". I replied I preferred to think of that incident as just "the old days". :)

I look at some news, and collegiate sports...but mostly items related
to weather and amateur radio. Many of the weather and ham radio items
I'd have to way to get without the internet.

Sadly, that's the way heads are bowed at the dinner table now. :P

I'm an early riser, if I'm not up by a little after 5 I think half the day
wasted. That's when I'll call some 24/7 repair line since nine out of 10 ti JM>I get someone by the third ring and not get "response time is three hours an JM>22 minutes" or the like. :)

I'm up early only for:

1) Medical Issues (especially for last minute prep work at home).

2) The cleaning folks are coming (they usually show on a Friday, when I
take my Mom and I to lunch and to the hairdresser).

3) Maintenance is coming by to fix something, or there's an inspection scheduled. They tell us we'll get 72 hours notice, but sometimes, it's
not that much. They have had issues out here with drug runners/meth
labs, and folks keeping "unauthorized guests" in the apartments. I
rarely have company, and most of the time, am alone.

4) An early morning ham radio event, or license exam session.

Normally on Saturday and Sunday, I get to sleep in...but usually am up
by 9am. I don't rest well at night anymore. I've had a persistent
respiratory illness since September (that was bronchitis and a severe
sore throat). It eased off in October, but the sore throat, hacking,
etc. came back in November. The thing is, my lungs are basically
"clear"...but if I'm around a lot of water, or especially after eating (especially after eating out), I start hacking like a cat with a
furball!!). :P

I had to do my yearly rent recertification calls this morning...I put
it off as long as I could, but usually wait until midweek after
Thanksgiving to do it. When I submit all the medical expenses, with my
bank statements, instead of having to pay "full market value" which is
almost $700, I may be able to pay less than $300, with a lot of medical
bills the previous year. Most of the calls I made didn't take too long
to process, but there was one that I must've been on hold with for at
least an hour!!

At least I could download and print the bank statements. Now, when I
go in to pay the rent on Friday (since the 3rd is on a Sunday), I'll set
up an appointment to start all that other paperwork. I have to have it
done by the end of January (I usually try to complete it before
Christmas), or I either face full market value rent, or eviction...and,
I don't want either one.

I have statements, both e- and paper that go back years and years, along w
tax filings.

The e-Statements are easier...I don't have to worry about them getting
lost in the mail. When I do my yearly rent recertification (I'm
waiting for all the medical receipts for it to arrive in the mail), I
download the bank statements, then print them when I'm ready. Then, I
give everything to management, and they sort it out, and figure out my
rent for next year. I don't know if the folks on Social Security
(Disability) are supposed to get a C.O.L.A. (cost of living adjustment)
in 2018 or not...but it's likely to be much smaller than the idiots in Washington, DC will get for a raise. :P

net for telnetting to my bbses, and for getting email, and that's pretty
much it... Once in a blue moon, I'll search out something.... usually I
