I was looking at the Index of a Map Atlas and saw the word Ouachita.

That reminded Me of a River Tow Boat named Ouachita that I saw coming
through Lock and Dam 43 on the Ohio River.

I asked the Mate on the head of the Tow how to pronounce the name of the
Boat and what He said sounded like "Watch a tall".

I told him I had thought of calling it "O ah chita" when I first saw the
Boats name, and the Mate laughed at Me and told Me they were from Arkansas.

After seeing the word in the Atlas I read about it some on Wikipedia and
a few other web pages.

I learned a Indian Tribe goes by that Name, there is a River by that Name
that runs through Arkansas and Louisiana, and the Name of a County in The
State of Arkansas.

I thought that You might get a chuckle reading about My first impression
of the name Ouachita I saw on the River Boat, since You live in Arkansas.

That's the correct pronounciation. There is a private college in Arkadelphia...Ouachita Baptist University (OBU).

I thought that You might get a chuckle reading about My first impression EV>of the name Ouachita I saw on the River Boat, since You live in Arkansas.

We have some strange town names in Arkansas. Several years ago, a
local restaurant had a questionnaire of Arkansas towns, with puns for
the clues.

My favorite was with the clue "Kiss Again" -- the town is "Smackover".

It was the late Glen Campbell, from Delight, Arkansas. The song was
"The Wichita Lineman", for the city in Kansas. There is a Ouachita
County in south Arkansas (Camden is the county seat), and the Ouachita
River that goes through Arkadelphia and Camden (and sometimes, it does
flood).

It's been long enough ago, I wasn't sure how the song had spelled it...
but I did remember the connection... :)

Several years ago, with the brouhaha over colleges, etc. using Indian
tribe names for their schools, and some did change their team
names...such as Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Arkansas. They
used to be known as the Indians...now, they're the Red Wolves.

But, with Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida...they do a
lot of stuff for and with the Micousoukee Indian Tribe...and even have
Chief Osceola and Renegade (his horse) with a flaming spear, for their
football games. And, both sides issued statements that "they had no
problems with each other".

Florida State, like Texas A&M in College Station Texas, has an
EXCELLENT meteorology department...and one of FSU's created hurricane
forecast models is used during the Atlantic Hurricane Season by the
National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida.
