Around here, many will park in the Handicapped/Disability space..even though it warns "Permit Required - Fine $250"...yet, there is no
evidence of disability...hang tag or otherwise. It makes one want to "break their legs to make them deserving". :P

Admittedly, a lot of my disabilities are hidden...but with the recent diagnosis of being in the early stages of degenerative disk disease in
the spinal column, they won't be taking away my disability now!!

Sorry to hear that. it's what I have and no fun. Be prepared to make some serious life changes to keep it at bay.

Be very careful to not get overweight. That makes it a lot worse.

Well, my BMI classes me as obese. When the doctor says "you're
overweight", I reply "tell me something I don't know". The worst time of
the year for dieting is the holiday season, or with family reunions.

My Dad had that as well, but he wasn't overweight. Yet, it was
pancreatic cancer that killed him...he only lasted 6 weeks after being diagnosed...right before my parents 54th wedding anniversary.

True but work on it anyways. For me it's automatic. Weight goes up, pain goes up. Pain goes up, I stop eating. Self correcting, but then I've never been truely overweight. High metabolism even after hitting the 40's where most naturally gain. I'm a little heavier than I should be, but not enough to be a problem.

5ft1, weighed Friday at 128. Spine Doc says I'd feel a little better at 120 but not enough to make myself miserable over it since my natural setpoint is 126-130.

Have you asked for a referral for a dietician to work with you? It's actually a good idea and your insurance should cover it. There are some foods you should probably be eating more of that provide for some help and at the same time, they may be able to come up with some new things to try and see if you like that are lower in overall calories.

Because Japanese Doctors are highly trained in Diet (unlike US Doctors) when my back first started getting bad, he was able to advise on several things to add to my diet that would help. No, it wasn't endless bowls of Kale and rabbit food.

A simple classic is if you use chicken stock fairly often in your
cooking, to start making your own bone broth in a crockpot from leftover baked chicken carcasses (can have a little skin and meat still on them but try to minimze the skin for fat reasons). The so called 'bone stock' at the store is not the same so don't waste your money on it. The real one will turn to consomme in the fridge (grin). Freezes well so I'll make up several quarts in my middle sized crockpot with the bones, spine and all the joints off a 3-4lb chicken (baked for dinner, this is the leftovers for a second use). Place in crockpot broken up a bit so it's mostly a flat layer then add water to 3 inches above that. Salt if you desire. If you've some leftover meat that dried out a bit, it's fine (though not classic) to add that too. Adding a little powdered chicken stock after it's done is fine as well to boost the flavor. Set crockpot on low or medium for about 24 hours.

Then put a collendar in a big pot and dump it in and remove the collendar with the bones and any stray meat to toss out (the meat will be cooked to death by then and have no flavor, possibly tough too). What you've done is make something very like 'Osteo-BiFlex' (GSM) where the only cost is about 25-50cents to run the crockpot because the chicken bones were something you were going to toss anyways.

Key things, this is not 'chicken soup' really as too much meat seems to ruin it but you can later add fresh meat to a portion and make a true chicken soup if you want. You can't use fried chicken parts for the bones, somehow it just doesnt work. You can use any bones from baked chicken so for example if you bake a fair amount of bone in chicken breasts, save the bones up in the freezer until you have enough for a batch. I call that 'gently knarfed' and within the family, no one minds (considering the long 24 cooking in the crockpot) if someone nibbled the meat off a leg bone later turned into bone broth. (grin).

    Carol,

I have one big meal a day...lunch. I rarely eat breakfast, and by the
time I get back from errands, I'm doing my ham radio nets, and don't
have time to cook dinner...because it's too close to bedtime when I get
done with the ham radio nets.

5ft1, weighed Friday at 128. Spine Doc says I'd feel a little better at 120 CS>but not enough to make myself miserable over it since my natural setpoint is CS>126-130.

I'm taller and heavier. I'm not diabetic, but have the potential to
become Type 2. Earlier this year, my hemoglobin A1C was 6.1, lower than
before. The level for type 2 diabetes is if the A1C is 7 or higher.

The thing is, I only have Medicare. Shortly before my wife died nearly
11 years ago, they took away my SSI and Medicaid, saying that "$1500 a
month between the two of us was too much money". Don't get me started on
that crap...especially for the greedy politicians and CEO's who say
that "$175,000 a year or more isn't enough for them to survive on". They
    don't have a clue!!

Plus, Medicare will NOT pay for the dietician's consultation...just
like they will NOT pay to have my toenails clipped each month. I can't
squeeze the clippers, due to severe arthritis in my hands and throughout
by body...not to mention I can't bend over to reach the doors, due to a severely strained groin muscle -- it's not a hernia, but might become
    one eventually.

Because Japanese Doctors are highly trained in Diet (unlike US Doctors) when CS>back first started getting bad, he was able to advise on several things to a CS>to my diet that would help. No, it wasn't endless bowls of Kale and rabbit CS>food.

Now, while I *LOVE* salads...especially a grilled chicken salad done
by Texas Roadhouse, I have to have the iceberg lettuce. The romaine
lettuce is too chewy for me...especially with full dentures. But, the
lettuce is loaded with fiber...and for me, constipation is not an issue.
They have found polyps in my colon 3 times, but no colon cancer (the
second greatest killer behind heart disease and breast cancer, but also
one of the most preventable). My next colonoscopy is just under a year
    away.

Over the years, I lost an uncle to colon cancer...my Dad and his
sister to pancreatic cancer...and my grandmother to lung cancer. I don't
think a single family has been immune from that scourge.

    <SNIP!>

The problem is that due to the arthritis, I have a very difficult time standing in one place for more than a minute...whether in front of the
sink, the toilet, or in the shower...never mind I have a propensity to
fall in the shower. I rarely use the stove, and basically, if the meal
can't be cooked in the microwave oven, I don't buy it.

Now, I try to square dance a few times a month (3 hours of square
dancing is equivalent to 6 miles of walking). I don't get long winded,
so my heart is good, but I do perspire, to keep from getting overheated.
Yet, when you go out afterwards, and order a banana hot fudge royale

sundae, well.... <G> -- yet this one club goes out to an area Subway
restaurant after the dance...even though snacks and non-alcoholic
    beverages are at the dance.

In square dancing, I'm not standing in one spot for very long, but
moving around, so my legs don't get to throw a fit. But, if I stand in
one spot for too long, I start shaking like my whole body has
    Parkinson's Disease.

Back to food, I was able to get a conglomeration of items for a
casserole, which gives me 2 full meals when I do it. My Mom used to make
a similar one years ago, but it had corn in it, and my colon won't
tolerate corn anymore...so I had to switch to English Peas, noted below.

The ingredients (all microwaveable) are as follows:

    1) 2 containers of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. You remove the cheese
packet, then fill water up to the fill line (otherwise, the container
will catch fire in the microwave oven), put it on a microwave safe
plate, microwave it for 3 1/2 minutes, then stir in the cheese packet. I
do one packet at a time.

    2) 1 container of Minute Man Wild Rice (like rice pilaf). You remove the
cover, place it on a microwave safe plate, and microwave it for 1
    minute.

    3) 1 packet of BirdsEye English Peas. You place the packet on a
microwave safe plate (not opening it), microwave it for 5 minutes, and
let it sit for 2 minutes. There are a LOT of peas in that packet!!

    4) Cut up 4 hot dogs, and microwave them for 2 minutes.

    5) Add all of them together, and it's meal time. :)

Key things, this is not 'chicken soup' really as too much meat seems to ruin CS>but you can later add fresh meat to a portion and make a true chicken soup i

It reminds me of The Far Side Cartoon where this little chicken is in
bed, ill. Momma Hen brings the little one a bowl of chicken soup broth,
and says "Eat this...it'll be good for you. Besides, it's nobody we
    know!!". <G>

I went to the doctors today, thinking I was going into a relapse of bronchtis...but the sinus drainage is causing huge problems. So, they prescribed some medication with codeine that I'll take before I go to
bed at night (it will knock me out), and gave me a steroid shot in the
hip -- I just dropped the pants and underwear to make it easier -- yet,
nudity means nothing to the medical professionals...it's just another
    day at work for them.

However, I've known people who don't want to go to the doctor, because
"they don't want them to see them naked". I can't convince them that
"Like it's something they HAVEN'T seen??!!". This is especially if
you're a pregnant female in labor...you can forget about all modesty in
    this situation!!

Back to the steroid shot, it didn't hurt going in, but after she
removed the needle, my hip was sore for about 15 minutes!! I did get a
flu shot in October, and usually get one once a year.

The thing is, they can't do a thing about sinus problems, or
arthritis. I eventually will need hip, neck, and knee surgery...but, I'm
trying to put all of these off as long as possible. I'm afraid that
eventually, I'll end up in a wheelchair.

Doing traffic control there is a lot of just standing around.
I'm a pacer. Instead of just standing in one spot I'll pace for as much room
as I have. The old legs don't like being in just one spot very long and walking around is a lot easier on me. I get worn out standing in one spot for just a few minutes but pacing for over an hour I have no problems.
