Right... and then possibly more might have been accomplished over the

At least he isn't an absentee slumlord.... We have way too many of them
around here.... A building that was owned by one of them, a brick
apartment building, burned about a week ago, and was immediately torn
down... apparently one of the firemen fell through the floor... a couple
days later, as they were removing the rubble, they were still hosing it
down to keep the fire from restarting.... My friend who was with me as
we saw the building being taken down said that a string of houses on the

slumlord until the city took them away for too many violations....

With all the various taxes some landlords would rather the building be
gone rather than pay the taxes, since empty land is generally cheaper
than with something on it and might be more easily sold.

We have absentee landlords here as well.
I've had one or two of them myself, not here, in other places.
My first landlord here was great, probably one of the top five I've
ever had. He was in the building six days a week, if nothing else than a
walk through. Tell him about a problem in the morning and generally when
I got home from work it was either taken care of, being worked on or told
    when it would be done.
He sold it over 25 years ago when he got up in years.

    I had one once.
I was in university and through friends, managed to get a nice little
three bedroom house, a block from campus. (Had to have roommates to
    afford it).
Long story short, I had been warned by the woman I was roommates with
whom I "inherited" the place about this landlady and how she lied a lot.
I wanted to re-paint the place and she happened to be in town (she lived
in TX) and invited her over. I had a tape recorder hidden under her
chair and asked if I brought the paint could the rent for that month be
knocked off. (The cost of paint, etc would be equal to a months rent).
She agreed. I bought the paint and presented the bill to the rental
agency who said Mrs X would never agree to that. I played back the
recording and they gave in after a while. (The rental agent also wanted
to "borrow" the recording but I was too smart for that).
I was back in Morgantown a few years ago and that house is gone now.

    Very nice and well maintained.
It was one of those houses that cling to the side of a hill.
(Everything in Morgantown is on a hillside). One side of the house was
right on a busy sidewalk, you could reach out and touch people passing
by. The other side was a sheer drop of several hundred feet. Picture
Malibu beach houses with one side on ground and the other on stilts, only without an ocean. :)
I later lived in a trailer that was on stilts as well. The bedroom end
was on solid ground, the kitchen on steel beam stilts and you parked
under the kitchen. There was also a access road there as well. Looking
out the kitchen window it was like one was flying. :)
Those were later removed, something about them not being safe. :)

The only thing I'l think might not be safe would be if the ground heaved
some, so that the stilts were unbalanced from the rest... My Daddy's
cousin and her husband had a trailer on the banks of the Susquehana (if
I'm remembering the river's name right... along Rt 11/15 coming down
into Harrisburg PA)... Since the river would flood regularly, they
raised the entire trailer up on stilts, and had some storage beneath
it... but it kept the trailer from being flooded... They are both long
gone now, but the trailer, still on stilts, was still there the last
time I drove by and was able to see down the access road into the
area... :) Some of their neighbors followed their example... :)

The house was oddly built, with the living room and kitchen being in
what would be the basement with the bedrooms/bath on street level.
    There were three entrances.
I had a drive way (off street parking was an extreme luxury in that
town) and then down a few steps into the the living room. The kitchen
was off from that, with stairs to the second floor (street level)
bedrooms. Off the kitchen was another door and set of steps up to the
street. (That door was seldom used).
The street level door opened into a small entry way with one bedroom
to the left, the bath at the end of the entry, a bedroom door on the
right and through that room into mine, which had a window right on the sidewalk.
So many student apartments were rat traps but this place was well
