    crime.

got more than my share of whippings growing up,

I was never beaten or abused but I knew my limits.
And there were times I was told to "go get a switch" and while looking
had time to think over whatever I had done. And if it wasn't large
enough I was sent back to find a bigger one.
When it was used on me it was a gentle, but firm, whack on the legs
(covered by pants) and told not to do it again.
It was more painful just being sent to look for a switch than any
    physical action.

years ago...yet he still drinks beer quite a bit. If he gets in jail
for DUI again, he's staying there, as I don't have the funds to bail him
out. The same goes for if he ends up writing a hot check.

So long as someone bails him out of his situation he will see no
reason to change. Mommy and daddy (literally or figuratively) will take
    care of things.
Some people need to learn the hard way and sometimes even that doesn't
    work.

I got spanked alot yet that was NOTHING compared to falls and injuries I have had from when I was in my peak of skateboarding and attempts at riding BMX freestyle.
If I had the money I would get surgeries where I could become somewhat
"bionic" and keep medical research professionals in business.

I read where some country (Sweden? Norway?)

The idea of a totally SAFE society scares me.

At least if you're not going to spank your children get them into
    skateboarding and BMX . :D

    Or snowboarding :D

Mine were few and far between and deserved.

I have never had any major injuries (broken arms, legs, etc) but have
done some dumb things over the years, and have the scars to prove it. :)
I am somewhat clumsy and manage to do something or other often.

The idea of a totally SAFE society scares me.

While many try to make life that way, it is impossible.
Part of growing up is doing dumb things. And, hopefully learning from
    that.
I don't recognise you as being here before, so welcome to Memories.

Regardless of one's age, we all have memories. :)

    Joe,

I read where some country (Sweden? Norway?) wants to make spanking a
    crime.

    Good grief.

It was more painful just being sent to look for a switch than any
    physical action.

My late father used the belt...definitely not fun.

So long as someone bails him out of his situation he will see no

Well, our Dad died almost 12 years ago, and with our Mom in the
nursing home, that's out. And, if he hasn't learned his lesson the first
time, I'll let him sit and rot in jail...it's called "tough love".

Some people need to learn the hard way and sometimes even that doesn't
    work.

    Sad, but true.

There was a program on TV years ago called "Scared Straight"...these
hardened criminals cursing the kids, etc., and telling them what prison
life was really like...in the hope it'd deter them from a life of crime.
