I personally have a debit card. If I can't purchase it right then,
and have money for the rest of my bills, I don't do it.

I'm the same way, though I do have a credit card (with a $200 cap) I
use once in a while to keep it active and pay off at the end of the month.
I got into financial trouble years ago when I was "between jobs" for
several months and lived on credit cards. But not for any extras. I
used it for rent, groceries (no dining out), utilities, etc. Maxed out several.
Once I was working steady again I paid those off, using a credit
recovery service. They paid the bills and I made monthly installments to
them, which was deducted directly from the bank. It was a couple of
years before I was debt free and still am. :)
Financially things started turning around after this.
I am fortunate I have few expenses and able to save most of my pay
cheques. I try to live on about $40 a month for "extras".
I don't want to go back to the days fearing each phone call was from collector dunning me. (The only fear now is my captain wanting me to
    work that day. <g>)

    Joe,

I'm the same way, though I do have a credit card (with a $200 cap) I
use once in a while to keep it active and pay off at the end of the month.

I don't get enough to have a credit card. My brother was "a user" off
of my Mom's...and he was livid because I cancelled it. Yet, he couldn't understand that using a credit card just delays paying for the purchase.
You or someone else has to pay for it. I guess he thought the money tree
was evergreen, and would never be cut down. He's 21 months younger than
I am (I'll be 60 in a year and a half), but he doesn't have brain damage
to do the math...I think he's just lazy and irresponsible...sad, but
    true.

I got into financial trouble years ago when I was "between jobs" for
several months and lived on credit cards. But not for any extras. I JM>used it for rent, groceries (no dining out), utilities, etc. Maxed out JM>several.

I had a Discover Card and a bank Visa Card, and ran up a large amount
of bills...some for medical, but some for travel, car repairs, etc. I
ended up going into Chapter 13 Bankruptcy nearly 10 years ago. I was
discharged from it a few years back, but I know I can't have a credit
card. When I get calls from folks offering me one, I tell them "You're
wasting your time...I'm in Bankruptcy". They usually hang up after that, because on a credit report, a bankruptcy (to me) is an instant red flag.

I don't want to go back to the days fearing each phone call was from
collector dunning me. (The only fear now is my captain wanting me to JM>work that day. <g>)

I've used up all my sick days, so I'm calling in "dead". <G>
