So certainly was enough to sustain you for the long trek... :)

I stopped at a little roadside picnic area in Ohio and let Muffy
out to explore the wooded area, etc. When it was time to leave I
called and called and she never came, which she usually did. After
some time I said in a loud voice, "Well, I guess I'll just have to
leave her and she can fend for herself" and slowly headed back to the
car. As I was loading the car I heard this pitiful mew and she came creeping out of the weeds. :)

"please don't leave without me, I'll be good..." When we used to take
our cats on trips, they'd been trained to collar and leash... so we'd
let them roam, on a fairly long leash, to get the benefit of the weeds
and such... and be able to reel them in when it was time to go.... :)

She was not one to roam. A quick tour of the hallway was usually
enough for her.

Of course, outdoors has more of those really interesting smells than a
hallway does... :)

Muffy (Grey Maine coon) lived to be about 18, got her as an about six
month old, from the shelter.
About six months or so after she died I adopted Molly, a tabby, an
"older" cat, about five or six and she lived into her mid-teens as well.
About 18 months after adopting Molly Blanche (black and white Maine
coon, picture Sylvester in the cartoons) showed up and a stray. She had
a slave before me but I think she was abandoned for some reason since she
kept going back to a nearby apartment building for several years. Blanche
lived to her early teens.
Blanche is the only one who ever wore a collar and when I figured I
was her new slave since no response to "found cat" notices I removed the collar. She liked to roam and I didn't want her collar to get caught on something with her being harmed. She even gave a sight of relief when it
was removed. :)
She was the only one who ever used the carrier, someone had thrown it
out. I cleaned up and set out with the door open so they would get used
to it. Only problem was the first time, taking her the vet, but after
that she enjoyed being in it, even knowing it was a visit to the vet when
she became ill in her last year.

We've had cats come to us with flea collars on... those we've always
taken off, since in our experience the flea collar is more likely to
sicken the cat than to kill off fleas... Instead we gave them brewers
yeast tablets and kept them healthy, and they could repel the fleas on
their own... But the regular collar, we explained to the kitty in
question, was a sign of belonging to this family... ;) When we let
them out in the yard, they were usually leashed, so as not to roam too
far.... So, when on trips, we could let them explore a bit safely.. :)

The two we have now are the first of our cats not to be trained to
collar or leash... we've had a couple of our son's cats that hadn't
been, that he had let roam freely, so we didn't restrain them.... But
these two of ours now don't go outside at all, strictly indoor cats....
